PostulerMissionThe space sector has undergone major upheavals over the last twenty years. These have often been reduced to the notion of New Space, but a number of studies have revealed the transformations at play and specificities depending on different national contexts (Pasco 2017; Rottner et al., 2021; Saint-Martin 2021; Sénéchal-Perrouault, 2021). The proposed topic is part of this research dynamic. It will refine our understanding of the transformations underway by focusing on the European context. Improving knowledge of this geographical area, which has received too little academic attention, is also a priority of the submitted thesis.Furthermore, the research will concentrate on the propulsion sector and the role of emerging companies in launch activities. The PhD candidate will therefore contribute to the research programme on the history of propulsion and rocketry in France, which is being developed by the Junior Professor Catherine Radtka within the newly-funded chair dedicated to the study of long-term changes in the aerospace sector within the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers. The subject encourages an investigation of recent transformations through a comparative analysis of French and German start-ups and the technologies they develop. The PhD candidate will contextualise these activities within the dynamics of business and innovation ecosystems. The focus will be on analysing their historical development and the ways in which such enterprises engage in innovation. The emergence of new social actors and/or the continuities that facilitate the emergence of new enterprises will be subjected to particular scrutiny. It is anticipated that the candidate will develop a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter, which will facilitate their ability to take ownership of it, while also bearing in mind the following key issues:– What skills and expertise do entrepreneurs draw upon in order to develop their novel solutions and enter new markets?– What training and links do they have with the traditional space sector? In other words, are they external actors attempting to gain a foothold in the traditional ecosystem through technical and/or organisational innovations, or do they benefit, conversely, from a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of the traditional sector, derived from their training and past professional experience, as well as any professional or familial networks they may have?– How do they utilise or exert influence upon the regulatory and institutional framework within which their activities are conducted? The case studies will enable the identification of current dynamics pertinent to the space sector, as well as an enhanced comprehension of the factors underpinning successes within the French and German contexts. The doctoral student will be enrolled in the Cnam’s Abbé Grégoire doctoral school, which has defined a 180 ECTS doctoral pathway that, in addition to the thesis (150 ECTS), includes training, research and teaching activities that contribute to the doctoral student’s training. This pathway is in accordance with the requirements set forth in the doctoral decree of 26 May 2016, as amended by the decree of 26 August 2022. It entails a combination of teaching, seminars, international assignments, and work experience.BibliographyPasco X. (2017), Le nouvel âge spatial.
