The Centre of Expertise for Talent, Development and Reward, is based within the People Directorate, and is responsible for strategic HR services at our Avery Hill campus. 

The Directorate is seeking to appoint a Reward and Benefits Trainee, for 36 months, with the possibility of the role becoming permanent following end of the development scheme. 

The role sits within a busy and dynamic team responsible for delivering strategic interventions which supports the university’s development to attract and retain high performing people to deliver the aims of the People and University Strategies.

As a Reward and Benefits Assistant (Trainee), you will be expected to complete the learning and development requirements of the role which include training days, being mentored in year 1, by becoming an active member of a pertinent reward and benefits network and through the possibility of being sponsored for a postgraduate qualification via a partial fee commitment (see development support in attached applicant pack for further details). 

As a trainee, you will be expected to utilise the support on offer to maximise the benefits to your professional development and you will be expected to deliver project work to develop your skills and competences in reward and benefits with aligned specialisms for talent attraction, management and performance so these deliver impact. Following a 3-year development journey, it is anticipated you will be considered a subject matter expert in this role. 

To support your career progression there will be a formal evaluation of your role with an aligned grading change at 18 months and then at 30 months through a formal assessment to enable you to apply for the post on a permanent basis – see annual wage with performance assessments in attached applicant pack for further details. 

The post holder will have the opportunity to participate in a supportive environment to develop the behaviours, knowledge and professional skills required of the role and the team. 

The post holder will support the Directorate by carrying out work in line with a strategic plan for developing good practice in rewards and benefits through projects and annualised activities. 

These are likely to include: 

  • Benchmarking reviews for reward and benefits so we remain competitive
  • Improvements to pay and reward mechanisms which anticipate demographic and labour market changes, competitive markets including attracting talent, and delivering strategic support to maintain recruitment and retention.  
  • Senior managers pay, attraction and retention support
  • Support for benefits developments and alignment with Employee Value Propositions (EVPs)
  • Support for talent management strategies 
  • Support for equality, diversity and inclusion in pay and benefit
