A full-time academic in Sociology of Transitions

Main campus: Louvain-la-Neuve

About us

Post description

Within the Faculty of Economic, Social and Political Sciences and Communication and the Institute for the Analysis of Change in Contemporary and Historical Societies, Social Sciences and Humanities Sector and in a multi-site environment, post duties include teaching, research and community service activities.

  • Teaching

You will mainly teach in the area of sociology and the social sciences, to adults returning to education to study for a Master’s in Economic and Social Policy. In this framework you must be able to provide teaching in the following areas: sociology of transitions, sociology of inequalities, political sociology, etc. You will also contribute teaching on methodological questions (training for university work, dissertation project).

You will also be invited to contribute teaching to the various other courses run by the Faculty. You will also supervise Master’s dissertations.

  • Research

You will develop your research activities, including directing research programmes, in the area of the sociology of transitions, with a particular focus on the transformations of productive and organisational models and changes in lifestyles and cultural models in the face of digital, demographic and environmental transformations.

Contemporary societies are undergoing rapid, multidimensional changes. The development of digital technologies is transforming the economic, political and social activities. The climate crisis calls the lifestyles into question. Demographic trends (ageing, migration, etc.) challenge the cultural models. These dynamics are global and pervasive – they have implications in every aspect of social life. They have multiple consequences: changes in work and occupations, in productive and organisational models, in lifestyles and cultural models.

Your research will make it possible to understand the dynamics of change that are in play in the framework of these transitions and their effects in one or several areas of social life – work and employment. education, consumption, family and intergenerational relations, health, social relations, inequalities, justice, migration, etc.

You will supervise PhD theses.

  • In addition …

Once you are tenured, you will carry out various service activities and responsibilities within the institution, such as programme committee and study jury roles and management responsibilities within the faculty or research institute.

You will also contribute to serving society, particularly in the economic, social, cultural or development cooperation fields. Finally, you will ensure, through research and teaching activities, the university’s international visibility.

Who we’re looking for

  • Education

You have a PhD in Sociology or a comparable field. You have completed it with an extended study period abroad or significant experience outside your home institution.

  • Experience

You have a proven track record in university teaching, evidenced where possible by formal evaluations. Your scientific experience is demonstrated by publications of international standing.

  • Skills

You work well as part of a team of teachers and integrate research results into your teaching. You are capable of conducting high-level scientific research, from obtaining funding to team management. You are creative, open to pedagogical innovation and multidisciplinarity.

You communicate in French and English. If this is not the case, you undertake to acquire a command of these two languages within two years of taking up your post. Knowledge of other languages is an asset.

Specifically :

You have skills in teaching adults.

What we offer

  • Tenure after positive assessment of the probationary period – typically four years. This type of career entitles you to a public sector pension.
  • Appointment as lecturer or professor according to your previous academic experience, as determined by the Rectoral Council.
  • Teaching load capped at 90 hours for a full-time tenure-track position, and 150 hours once tenured.
  • An attractive and progressive salary according to seniority and the promotion process.
  • A start date of 1 September 2024 at the earliest.
  • An integrated leadership and management training programme, including a range of pedagogical, linguistic and other training courses.
