We are on the lookout for an enthusiastic and motivated scientist to enhance our research and educational initiatives. In the role of Assistant Professor in the (BDA), you will have the chance to establish your own research agenda and contribute to teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.BDA focuses on the development and application of methodology for the analysis of biological data, in particular at the omics level. We blend a wide range of expertise, including bioinformatics, data processing and mining, machine learning/deep learning, data fusion, and modelling. As an assistant professor you will work on computational methodology for single-cell and spatial omics data analysis, related to open questions on pattern finding, data integration, modelling and/or analysis of signalling and communication. Your expertise will complement existing expertise in BDA and will allow strong collaborations with various experimental research groups within SILS. This ranges from groups working on developmental biology to plant biology to neuroscience. In addition, various opportunities exist for collaboration at the University of Amsterdam outside SILS, e.g. with the Informatics Institute.What are you going to do?
You will

  • develop and expand your own line of research in bioinformatics or systems biology;
  • be active in attracting external funding;
  • publish in international journals and present at conferences;
  • (co-)supervise PhD students;
  • teach in courses to bachelor and master students, and supervise student projects;
  • contribute to the development of new educational activities;
  • promote collaborations between research groups and share expertise;
  • develop your skills in coaching and inclusive leadership.

Your profile
You have/are

  • a PhD in Bioinformatics, Systems Biology, or similar;
  • some years of post-doctoral experience, with expertise in the analysis of single-cell omics and/or spatial omics data;
  • a good understanding of (large-scale) biological data analysis and systems modelling;
  • able to communicate with both data-scientists and biologists;
  • willing to contribute to valorization and outreach activities of the research group;
  • experience with acquisition of funding;
  • University Teaching Qualification (BKO) or the willingness to enrol in a program to achieve that within 2 years;
  • fluent in spoken and written English and Dutch.

If you are not fluent in Dutch, we expect you to acquire sufficient fluency in the Dutch language within three years of the start of the employment contract, to be able to teach in the Dutch bachelor courses.We will base our selection on your scientific track record and on your vision for future research, as well as on your teaching achievement, qualifications, and vision on future teaching. We offer a temporary contract for 38 (1.0 FTE) hours a week, preferably starting on 1 September 2025, for the duration of 18 months. A permanent contract follows after positive assessment of your performance. The job profile Assistant Professor 2 is applicable.The salary, depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract, will be € 4.537 – 6.209 gross per month, based on a fulltime contract (38 hours a week). This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants.
