Assistant Professor in Pharmacology & Therapeutics

Post Summary- Over the last two years the undergraduate medical curriculum has been undergoing extensive review and radical restructuring. As a result of this, the discipline of Pharmacology and Therapeutics is looking to appoint an Assistant Professor to contribute to the teaching of pharmacology to medical, biomedical science and allied health professional students. The successful candidate will have a key role in embedding curriculum reform changes within the discipline. This presents a unique opportunity to shape the educational environment in a move away from didactic lectures to small group teaching, and expand the second year medicine research project, which is a cornerstone of the medical curriculum. The research projects are unique to TCD and provide a feeder stream into the intercalated masters programmes, and prestigious programmes such as the Academic Intern Tract and the Irish Clinical Academic Training (ICAT) programmes. The ultimate aim of which is to provide a pathway to educate Academic Clinician leaders of the future. The successful applicant will play a leadership role in expanding this research programme, and will facilitate supervisor induction and engagement. The discipline has a close working and research relationship with the discipline of medical education, so there are numerous opportunities to transform and influence what will be a dynamic curricular reform process. The scale of these changes as part of the curricular reform process is significant for the Discipline of Pharmacology and Therapeutics and presents a great opportunity for the successful candidate to be involved in the implementation and direction of the new curriculum, a strategic imperative of the Medical School. They will enable the discipline and School to meet the challenges of this ambitious reform head-on, ensuring the delivery of a robust, innovative, and high-quality medical education program for years to come. In addition to teaching, there is also a strong ethos in research excellence within the discipline. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the research profile of the discipline. At present, research areas include, pharmacoepidemiology, clinical trials, neuroscience, cardiovascular/microvascular disease and education. The discipline has strong affiliations with research institutes across campus, but also a large model 4 hospital and the Welcome Trust, Health Research Board funded Clinical Research Facility at St James’s Hospital.
