General Description of the Position

The Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice at Delaware State University, Dover, Delaware invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level beginning fall 2022.

Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The following are the functions essential to performing this job:

  • The successful candidate for this position will be required to teach a broad range of undergraduate and graduate courses, including but not limited to Urban Sociology, Population Analysis, Sociology of Culture, Social Institutions, and Sociological Theories, Senior Seminar, and Economic Sociology.
  • Community service to the department, college, and university is expected.
  • The candidate will lead efforts to promote community-engaged research and foster interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research.
  •  The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation using some other combination of skills and abilities:

  • The successful candidate must have a background in social inequality research. The research priority areas include structural determinants of poverty, minority health, racial gaps in education, and social determinants of health.
  • Skills in building data products by combining data and algorithms is preferred.
  • Skills and experience with Python (Scikit-learn, NumPy, Pandas & Matplotlib) for data wrangling and statistical programming is required.
  • The candidate should be skillful in databases and application of machine learning to data on social inequality and related areas.

    Qualification Standards
  • An earned Doctorate in Sociology or related Social Science field.
  • Teaching experience and evidence of/or promise for scholarly productivity is required.
  • Evidence of extramural funding award is required; either as a PI, Co-PI, or consultant.
