We invite applications for an exciting fellowship program designed to attract, support, and retain highly motivated senior researchers who are interested in pursuing an independent scientific career. We especially welcome applicants who are Africa-based researchers who intend to continue/return to work in Africa. The fellows will join a highly successful and collegial environment equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. They will have the opportunity to work in the Unit’s three collaborative Themes with a number of research focus research areas: Viral Pathogens (Epidemiology and Intervention; Virus Discovery and Diversity; Oncogenic Virus Immunovirology), Vaccine Research (Immunomodulation; Schistosomiasis; Vaccines for Viruses), NCD Theme (Diabetes/Cardiometabolic disorders; Mental Health; NCD genomics; Violence; Disability).

The candidates will be PhD graduates with substantial experience in one of the related fields of the three Themes. For the Viral Pathogen Theme, priority will be given to candidates in the field related to Oncogenic viruses in any area including epidemiology, interventions, virology and immunology and in the field related to One Health, bringing together human, animal, and environmental health. For Vaccine Research, priority will be given to candidates with translational research experience in vaccines for viruses, tuberculosis or parasitic infections. For the NCD Theme, priority will be given to candidates in the fields of Diabetes/Cardiometabolic disorders; Mental Health and NCD genomics.  A consistent and significant track record of attracting research grant income from major research funders is essential. The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE and fixed term until 30 June 2026 with a potential for extension upon attraction of funding. The successful candidates will be supported to apply for major grants with a view to extending their contracts beyond this period. The post is funded by the MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit and is available immediately.

The salary will be on the Academic Pathway salary scale Grade 8 in the range £62,028 to £71,192 per annum. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based at the MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit, a faculty of LSHTM.
