About the role

University of Derby’s College of Science & Engineering in partnership with Acme Pharma Ltd are offering an exciting career-development opportunity to manage and deliver a challenging strategic Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project. Based at Acme Pharma’s premises in Welwyn Garden City, you will be employed by the University as a KTP Associate but work under the terms and conditions of the company.

Using your knowledge and skills to support the business and achieve specific project aims, you will receive on-going support from an Acme Pharma Supervisor, Academic Supervisor and an Academic Lead from the University of Derby to help you deliver. A personal training and development budget will also be available for you to access, as well as receiving access to the same training opportunities and facilities as University staff.

This is a dynamic role that presents an opportunity to lead a new project—PULSE. PULSE is an innovative, non-invasive, continuous blood glucose (BGL) and blood cholesterol (BCL) monitoring system. You will guide the project from its conceptual stages through to clinical trials and the development of a working Minimum Viable Product (MVP).

The role is mainly based at Acme Pharma Limited facilities, with visits to the University of Derby and some remote work.

Principal accountabilities

  • Lead and manage the PULSE project from concept to working MVP and clinical trials.
  • Coordinate between the University of Derby research teams and Acme Pharma Limited’s development and manufacturing units.
  • Implement Artificial Intelligence algorithms for lifestyle adaptation features.
  • Perform rigorous testing to ensure the device meets clinical standards and has the best Mean Absolute Relative Difference (MARD) in the market.
  • Prepare reports, documentations, and provide regular updates to both the academic and corporate stakeholders.
  • Assist in pitching the product to potential investors.
  • Continuous Learning: Willingness to stay updated with the latest advancements in the field of infrared sensors and glucose monitoring.
  • Work with Acme Pharma Ltd and academic team to integrate the project into a business platform, for non-invasive device to monitor BGL and BCL, in support of the company’s future plans.
  • To carry out work in a professional manner and engage in tasks and training as required by the Acme Pharma Ltd, University of Derby, and Innovate UK.

    Essential Criteria
    Qualifications

    • Honours Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics, Computer Science, or a related field.
    • MSc in areas like Photonics, Optoelectronics, Bioengineering, Analytical Chemistry, or a related field.

    Experience

    • Infrared Spectroscopy Knowledge: An understanding of the principles and applications of infrared spectroscopy.
    • Biosensor Development: Experience in designing, fabricating, and testing biosensors.
    • Coding experience with a procedural language, such as Python, C/C++, Java.
    • Knowledge of usage of certain equipment such the use of advanced PCB manufacturing and assembly and 3D printing.
    • Data Analysis: Proficiency in software tools to interpret IR spectra and translate it to meaningful data, especially blood glucose levels.
    • Microfabrication: Knowledge of microfabrication techniques

    Skills, knowledge & abilities

    • Physiology & Biochemistry: Understanding of blood composition and glucose metabolism to ensure the sensor’s specificity and sensitivity.
    • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with medical device regulations, standards, and clinical testing, especially if the biosensor is meant for commercial application.
    • Strong background in medical device development and manufacturing.
    • Proficiency in Artificial Intelligence and machine learning algorithms.
    • Excellent project management skills
    • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams.
    • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Knowledge or Experience with clinical trial processes
    • Ability to work to deadlines.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

    • Ability to manage own academic research and associated activities, and to lead projects.
    • Willingness to work flexibly and be responsive to projects needs and partners expectations.
    • Willingness and flexibility to travel and work between University and external sites (across the UK and internationally) in a cost effective and timely manner.

    Desirable Criteria
    Qualifications

    • PhD in Photonics, Optoelectronics, Bioengineering, or Analytical Chemistry.

    Experience

    • Worked on project related to health and biomedical applications.
    • Published conference and journal papers.

    Skills, knowledge and abilities

    • Project management skills.
    • Implementation and validation of Machine learning models
