Job description

THIS VACANCY IS OPEN TO INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY 

  • To conduct a period of original laboratory and clinical research, leading to a PhD/MD (if applicable)
  • To pursue the programme on the ‘Investigation of the haemodynamic responses to the reduction of tricuspid regurgitation’ under the direction of Professor Simon Redwood
  • Develop the work programme for the research project in discussion with the project leads and others.
  • Work closely with the Principal Investigators to refine the project protocol and to be responsible for ensuring that the research components of the project are carried out in a timely and effective way
  • Co-ordinate the work undertaken for the above research project
  • Establish pilot projects with partners, through working closely with colleagues in the NHS
  • Liaise closely with colleagues in the research area including those working on their own and other projects
  • Review relevant literature, including the synthesis and reporting on work carried out by others in related areas
  • Ensure that appropriate ethical clearance is obtained for all research activity
  • To adhere to GCP, local and national governance guidelines pertaining to clinical research
  • Oversee and lead on the preparation of research instruments
  • Oversee and lead on the collection and analysis of data
  • Write progress reports
  • Take the lead in drafting conference papers and papers for publication
  • Present findings to different audiences and attend relevant conferences
  • Develop research proposals for future funding
  • Oversee the work of potential MSc and BSc students, as agreed with the project supervisors
  • Participate in the Department’s undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Carry out departmental administration duties as required.
  • Compliance at all times with the requirements of the Health and Safety regulations with responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of others in the working environment
  • Ensure confidentiality on all matters and information obtained during the course of employment
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties that are relevant with the Role Outline

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 1 year.

This is a full-time post – 100% full time equivalent.

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct all aspects of designated research projects, including obtaining of regulatory approvals, patient recruitment, data collection and analysis, database management and dissemination of results  
  • Collaborate with members of the research group and others within and external to KCL 
  • Provide periodic updates to (and discuss project progress with) supervisors 

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.  

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria  

  • Registered with GMC 
  • Medical degree 
  • Intercalated Science degree (at least 2:1) 
  • Knowledge and experience of cardiovascular medicine 
  • Previous experience of clinical and/or basic research 
  • Good verbal and written communication skills 
  • Good interpersonal skills; ability to work co-operatively within the group 
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team 
  • Self-motivated 
  • Ability to plan and prioritise workload 
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision 
  • Desirable criteria

  • Experience of supervision of students 
  • Experience of writing for publication 
  • Good organisational skills
