ECCAN Community Climate Co-ordinator

Contract duration: Fixed until March 2025 in the first instance, subject to ongoing funding confirmation by the
Scottish Government.
Hours of Work: Full time, 35 hours a week flexible with some evening / weekend work (for which time off in
lieu is provided).
Potential for compressed hours.
Annual Leave: 25 days paid leave plus ten public holidays
Pension: 5% Contributory Pension Scheme.
Additional Requirements: The post holder will be subject to a Disclosure Scotland check.
Location: Hybrid home and office working. Minimum 2 days per week in the office.
ECCAN’s offices are at 14 Forth Street, Edinburgh EH1 3LH, approximately 10mins walk from
Waverley rail station.

OVERVIEW

JOB PURPOSE

The role of Edinburgh Communities Climate Action Network (ECCAN) Community Climate Co-ordinator
will be to contribute towards the delivery of ECCAN’s key outcomes and outputs as listed below
(Main Objectives of the Hub 2024-25). The post-holder will support community groups
throughout Edinburgh to collaborate, network, and assist community groups in the design,
development, and delivery of community-led climate action projects.

  • ECCAN is in the process of launching themed sub-networks in Edinburgh and the role of the
    CCC will be to establish, enhance, and manage these networks in Year 1 of the post.
  • ECCAN will deliver the Climate Ready South-East Scotland climate risk assessment for
    SNIFFER in 2024 -25 with the CCC role delivering the community-facing element of this delivery
    until January 2025.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Support communities and community-based organisations in Edinburgh to deliver sustainable
community-led climate action projects.

Support the development of the sub-networks through attendance at events, hosting networking
events both online and in person, and working within existing climate action network
structures.

Connect with a range of stakeholders and community-based networks on the benefits of community
climate action, in conjunction with the Members & Events Lead.

Assist groups throughout Edinburgh on the design, development, and delivery of projects by
offering advice and support including funding applications to project planning.

Support organisations to build their knowledge, skills, and capacity to address the climate
emergency.

Support the Members & Events Lead on a range of community climate action events.

Support groups and communities to access a range of funding for climate action projects.

Prepare literature and online content on the work of the Hub.

Under the guidance of the Members & Events Lead, undertake Comms and PR work as outlined in
the ECCAN Communication Strategy – including online content such as social media.

Any other task as needed to fulfil the core aims of the Hub.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Edinburgh Communities Climate Action Network is Edinburgh’s Climate Hub, The Hub is fully
funded by the Scottish Government and one of a network of twenty-two Climate Action Hubs
established across Scotland to offer networking, support, and encouragement of co-ordinated
community-led climate action.

The Hub has been operating since March 2024 and is a membership organisation supporting diverse
communities, community groups and individuals throughout Edinburgh.

The vision of the overall Hub Programme defined by Scottish Government is –

 ‘a network of climate action hubs providing a vehicle for communities to come together and
engage in collective climate action, supporting the just transition to net zero and climate
resilient living, and driving wider change.’

Main Objectives of the Hub 2024-25

  • Local communities have the confidence and capacity to respond to the climate emergency.
  • Local communities have the knowledge to respond to the climate emergency.
  • Local communities have the skills to respond to the climate emergency.
  • Local communities are making use of relevant climate emergency information and data.
  • Broad collaboration and networking, ensuring the engagement is representative of the local
    community.
  • Additional/strengthened partnerships, networks and collaborations are facilitated.
  • Diverse and representative local communities are engaged in climate action, facilitated by
    the Hub including the targeting of previously unengaged communities.
  • Increased community-level mitigation or adaptation/climate resilient actions.
  • Local communities are supported by the Hub to implement climate mitigation, adaptation, or
    biodiversity actions.
  • Additional funding is brought in for climate mitigation or adaptation purposes.
  • Local communities are empowered to be involved in and influence policy and decision-making.
  • Climate emergency is mainstreamed in local and regional plans and policies.
  • Driving innovations or opportunities that have potential to benefit the wider community at
    a local or national level.
  • Potential innovative climate actions or policies identified.
  • Support for scoping or testing of innovative climate action or policy opportunities

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Knowledge of climate change and the challenges that this poses to communities throughout
    Scotland.
  • Experience in a community development role.
  • Experience and knowledge of the structures that exist at community level across the third
    sector and the local authority.
  • Extensive experience working with third sector and community groups.
  • Strong digital communication skills including Office 365, Canva, WordPress, etc.

Qualities

  • A strong team player with a pro-active attitude.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Good attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills .
  • Passionate about climate change, biodiversity, climate justice and the empowerment and the
    power of communities.

Qualifications

  • A degree in a related subject relevant to climate would be desirable however evidence of work
    experience in the community sector will be given equal weighting.
