Conservation Livelihoods Technical Specialist

This role will work with both Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) and Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust to strengthen and deliver both organisations’ integrated biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation strategies. Whilst this post is employed directly with Durrell the post-holder will work closely with colleagues at JOA.

Since 1968, JOA has been working around the world, responding to humanitarian crises, supporting international organisations a Jersey charities to undertake rural development projects, and running community projects with Jersey volunteers. JOA currently support international development projects in six target countries – Rwanda Malawi, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Zambia and Nepal – whilst support for humanitarian crises and Jersey charities is worldwide. JOA partners with implementing organisations around three key themes, which are synonymous with the island of Jersey. These are Dairy for Development, Financial Inclusion and Conservation Lives and Livelihoods.

JOA’s Conservation Lives and Livelihoods strategy focuses on regions where the threats to the wellbeing of people and nonhuman nature are inextricably linked. The overall objective of the strategy is to promote innovation and best practice in the design, delivery, and scaling of biodiversity conservation initiatives which engender multidimensional poverty alleviation and/or multidimensional poverty alleviation initiatives which enable effective and sustainable conservation and stewardship of natural resources. The Conservation Livelihoods Technical Specialist will play a key role in the development and delivery of this international grant making strategy, providing guidance to current JOA projects and partners advising prospective partners, and contributing to the review and selection process for new partners and projects.

The successful candidate will lead, advise and support the design, effective delivery and monitoring of impact of integrated biodiversity conservation and rural livelihoods initiatives across Durrell’s rewilding sites – predominantly in Madagascar and India, – whilst scoping out further opportunities at other rewilding sites. They will work closely with programme delivery and impact monitoring teams at both organisations and in multiple countries.
