Council External Members, University of Surrey – UK
Odgers Berndtson
The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to outstanding teaching and student experience, impactful research and innovation, and the creation of an environment in which students and staff achieve their full potential. We are one of a handful of universities ranked in the top 20 nationally for all three of research, teaching and student satisfaction, and we have been recognised as one of the three rising stars of the UK university sector. This is an exciting and critical time for our University as we build on the achievements of our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Max Lu, who will be stepping down in May 2025. With our new strategy, Vision 2041, we aim to secure our place among the top 100 universities in the world through the power of education and research, addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our time.Whilst the Higher Education sector faces unprecedented headwinds, Surrey’s strong leadership and governance have enabled us to remain financially resilient. We have budgeted a surplus for the current year and are determined to deliver a sustainable underlying surplus going forward. We are also fortunate to own a significant asset portfolio which enables us to invest strategically whilst retaining a strong balance sheet. We are seeking three to four high-calibre individuals to join as external Council members who will bring fresh thinking, strategic expertise and a shared commitment to the University’s ambitions and values. Council is the University of Surrey’s governing body, responsible for the strategic oversight and guidance of its mission and long-term goals, the stewardship of its assets and reputation, and the governance of its academic endeavours and financial sustainability. Membership of the Council comprises a majority of External Members, together with ex-officio and elected University Members. The successful candidates will have demonstrated significant, and ideally international, leadership and impact in their business or charitable careers. They will likely bring useful personal networks, and valuable board-level experience, or the equivalent, enabling them to engage across a wide range of topics within the university’s remit. We are particularly interested in additional expertise across one or more of the following areas: tech and AI, arts, business, health and life sciences, and people/organisation development. They must have impeccable integrity, propriety, and independence, as well as the ability and sensitivity to engage effectively with a broad spectrum of people. The role is unremunerated and will require a time commitment of approximately 20 days per year.
