Job Category: Pure ResearchDegree Level: Doctor’s Degree (e.g PhD)Job Description:The department head for Processing Research leads research into devices and device processing in III-V based material systems creating world class optical, opto-electronic, and high speed devices for communications. The principal function of the research manager is to support the research of the members of her/his team and their success . This position reports into the Optical System and Device Research Lab within Nokia Bell Labs. Peers of this position within the Lab perform research in optical transport systems, optical access systems, silicon photonics, quantum communications and computing, device design, epitaxy research, analytics and sensing, optical network automation, and use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in optical networks. It is expected that the department head is an active member of this larger research team and engage and collaborate within this lab and others inside Bell Labs to continue the long tradition of world leading research providing thought leadership and innovation to both Nokia and our industry. This position is within a joint venture established 20 years ago by Nokia (Alcatel at the time), Thales and CEA-Leti. As such, collaboration and advancements as part of the joint venture are also expected as well.Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of researchers and technicians (~10 permanent staff) responsible for the fabrication of optoelectronic components, integrated photonic circuits and microelectronic circuits within the global Bell Labs team as part of III-Vlab, an joint venture between Nokia, Thales and CEA Leti. Key responsibilities include: setting and reviewing personal and team objectives, supporting the professional development of team members and developing workload and resources allocation plan.
  • Participation in the organisation of the III/Vlab, which includes Nokia’s activities as well as those of the other members of the JV through the management committee (CODIR), participation in the technological coordination.
  • Participation with the program groups in the preparation of multi-year roadmaps for the laboratory’s research areas, in particular with regard to increasing the maturity of the technologies and the innovations to be introduced into the technology chains.
  • Contribute to the funding of III-Vlab:
  • by supporting the programme groups in the submission of institutional projects,
  • through the efficient organisation of the InP multi-project platform,
  • in the context of external sales of components.
  • Manage technical activities, providing expertise and ensuring process maturity.
  • Managing the launch and evaluation of manufacturing batches: defining, planning and allocating the resource involved, in coordination with programme managers, capitalising on results.
  • A good ability to analyse the risks associated with both advanced research activities and unavailability of manufacturing equipment.
  • Actively contribute within the III-Vlab to the development of the technology platform budget and investment plan.
  • Ability to report and communicate (to peers, higher and lower levels, participation in conferences).

Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of experience in people management or other experience in direct or indirect people reports.
  • Track record in applied research and/or leading-edge R&D activities, including scientific/technical publications and/or patents
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the fabrication of optoelectronic or microelectronic components, preferably based on III-V materials
  • Experience in the following fields would be an asset:
  • Thin film technologies (deposition, plasma etching)
  • Photolithography
  • Implementation of statistical designs of experiments
  • Mastery of statistical process control tools (SPC)
  • Advanced use of Microsoft Project
  • Agility in human relationship, empathy, communication, vision sharing, empowerment
  • Ability to conduct leading-edge research in a complex, demanding and fast-changing technical environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in French and English
  • PhD in Physical Sciences or Nanotechnologies (or Semiconductor Material, Telecom, or other relevant)
