University of Cambridge
(Job Share, Part Time 0.6 FTE) – Adoption leave cover
£26,048 per annum based on 22.5 hours hrs/week (£43,414 FTE)
Newnham College is looking a talented communications professional to join us as Director of Communications to cover a period of adoption leave from as soon as possible for up to one year. The tenure of this post may alter subject to the return to work plans of the current incumbent, and is subject to one month’s notice. This is a 0.6 job share, with the other Director of Communications as an equal Job Share Partner. This would be an ideal opportunity for an experienced person looking for flexible work in an interim post at a senior level, within a vibrant, supportive environment.
Working at Newnham is a chance to communicate outstanding research, collaborate with a global network of amazing women and be inspired by students with a vision.
Newnham’s Communications Office is about college communications in its broadest sense. We’re creating engaging alumnae publications, writing a prospectus that attracts great students, running social media and overseeing the website. Most crucially, we are here to help people within College communicate – with each other and the outside world. That may mean working with students and staff to ensure that routine information and procedures are clear. It may mean working with an academic to manage unexpected media attention, or helping them prepare for a major interview about their research. We balance long-term project management with the unexpected requests that come in every day.
A key focus for the incoming Job Share Partner will be leading on internal communications, including the production of a weekly internal newsletter. They will also lead on social media and digital content, and media relations, whilst the existing Job Share Partner will lead on website development, including the commissioning of a new website for 2024, research communications and alumnae communications. Other areas of the role will be shared (please see the job description). Each partner should however be comfortable with all aspects of the role to ensure support during times of annual leave or busy periods.
The Director of Communications reports directly to the Principal and has close working relationships with a wide range of people across the College, particularly the Development Office. The Communications Office will include the Directors of Communications and an Administrative Assistant working equivalent to 1 day per week. Additional work is done by external consultants, managed by the Directors of Communications.
The College also offers a generous package of benefits including the pro-rata equivalent to 33 days annual leave, a contributory pension scheme, the employer contribution to which is currently 21.6%, onsite parking when available, free gym membership, and an excellent lunch in College when working.
For an informal conversation about the post, please talk to the current Director of Communications job share partner, Sara Gaines ([email protected] ) 01223 335833 who works Monday to Wednesday)
The post is part-time, 22.5 hours per week, equating to 0.6 of full time equivalent (FTE) and worked on Wednesday to Friday. There will be occasional planned evening and weekend work (e.g. for special events), which can be divided between the Job Share Partners as appropriate.
The College actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society. The office is on the ground floor with level access.
