Job Category: VIP AJob Description:The Departments of Environmental and Resource Engineering (DTU Sustain) and the National Food Institute (DTU Food) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) offer a full-time Tenure Track Researcher position in Sustainable and Healthy Food Systems. A researcher position in Denmark is equivalent to an Assistant Professor, with a stronger focus on project acquisition and a weaker focus on teaching activities although you must contribute to teaching courses. In the DTU tenure track, after a maximum period of six years, researchers are evaluated and may be transferred to a permanent position as a senior researcher if given a positive academic assessment at the end of the tenure track process.The position aims to develop new approaches, methods, databases and tools to assess and optimize the impacts of food production, processing and consumption on both the environment and nutritional health, combining nutritional and health sciences with life cycle assessment and absolute environmental sustainability assessment methods applied to food technologies and systemsThe position is anchored at the Section for Quantitative Sustainability Assessment (QSA) at DTU Sustain, however the activities will be carried out within both DTU Sustain and DTU Food departments. In QSA, you will become part of a dynamic and team-based research environment with around 50 international staff members, postdocs, and PhD students, dedicated to the development and application of methods to quantify environmental sustainability. You will also play a central role in the collaborations between DTU Sustain and DTU Food and develop cross-cutting research activities within the area of environmental sustainability and health assessment of food systems. Collaborations with researchers affiliated to the DTU Centre for Absolute Sustainability, which is co-hosted at QSA, is also foreseen.Responsibilities and qualifications
Sustainability is a central element in DTU’s Strategy, where a strategic aim is “to develop technologies for sustainable change”. The position targets research within the field of quantitative sustainability assessment to support achieving this aim in the specific area of food systems, which should be understood in a generic sense as specific food products, food processes and technologies, and food production/consumption systems at large.We seek a candidate with the potential for independent research, a willingness to collaborate, network, and interact with other researchers, and the ability to disseminate research in seminars, conferences, and teaching classrooms.We expect you to lead and undertake the following tasks:

  • Identify and tackle key research questions to ensure systematic and consistent integration of environmental sustainability into the research on food product development, food processing, food supply/consumption systems and health risk assessment of food and diets, as carried out in DTU Food
  • Stimulate, initiate and drive research collaborations between DTU Food and DTU Sustain to address above identified questions, for example supporting the assessment and development of innovative sustainable foods and processing methods, conducting the assessment of environmental and health impacts of food systems, etc.
  • Develop life cycle inventory (LCI) datasets and life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods to quantitatively assess the impacts of food production, processing and consumption on ecosystems, human health and socioeconomic assets.
  • Set planetary boundaries and define so-called “safe operating spaces” for the food systems (from both production and consumption perspectives) addressing the large range of relevant environmental impact categories and utilise these to design optimised trajectories towards absolute environmentally sustainable and healthy food.

Qualifications:

  • Have strong expertise in several of the following fields: nutrition sciences and related health impacts, sustainable food production and consumption, use of food survey data, food systems optimization, environmental life cycle assessment and absolute environmental sustainability assessment of food systems.
  • Have programming skills and an understanding of key methodological concepts relevant to the field.
  • Be driven by a strong motivation for research and have excellent networking and communication skills in English.

Furthermore, selected candidates will be expected to:

  • Conduct excellent research and develop the field in one or more of the above-mentioned research areas
  • Disseminate their research in scientific publications and at international conferences
  • Take an active part and lead the management of projects, in which you will be involved
  • Secure national or international funding to advance science in line with your research vision
  • Participate in teaching activities, including the co-supervision of MSc and PhD student projects
  • Have leadership skills and be a team player in the research groups, where you will be involved, and contribute to their further development.

You must contribute to the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in nutrition sciences, environmental engineering, food sciences, chemical engineering, chemistry, or similar fields.You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.The position is to be filled as soon as possible (or according to mutual agreement).
