The Special Projects and Services Group/Unit/Division provides semiconductor processing services to internal and external researchers across a very wide range of technologies. This position offers the opportunity to widen knowledge and experience with many exciting technology challenges.
Reporting to the Head of the Process & Product Development Group, the Engineering Manager for the III-V Fabrication Lab will lead the operations, manage the engineering team, and support the effective use of the cleanroom by R&D and commercial users. The manager will ensure that processes and equipment are maintained to the highest standards, provide training and guidance to users, and uphold compliance with safety and quality regulations. The role combines technical leadership with operational management to meet both research and commercial objectives.Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all operations in the III-V fabrication lab, ensuring adherence to industry best practices and safe operational standards.
  • Supervise the performance of engineers and technical staff, setting goals and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Manage laboratory housekeeping, including user compliance, particle counts, and maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
  • Liaise with the maintenance team to address equipment issues and ensure maximum uptime and performance.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for cleanroom users, including PhD students, researchers, and staff, to ensure proper use of tools and adherence to lab protocols.
  • Offer guidance on process development and troubleshooting to users and team members.
  • Ensure effective scheduling and utilization of equipment, leveraging laboratory control software where applicable.
  • Promote process standardization and improvement, implementing best practices and supporting cross-lab knowledge sharing.
  • Collaborate with other fabrication groups to foster innovation and ensure smooth workflow boundaries.
  • Manage interactions with R&D and commercial customers, translating their requirements into achievable outcomes and supporting job costing.
  • Ensure all activities comply with the Quality Management System (QMS) and Health & Safety standards, including reviewing Risk Assessments (RAs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post

Essential Criteria

  • MSc degree in Engineering, Science, or a related discipline.
  • Typically a minimum of 10 years experience in semiconductor wafer process engineering in a commercial or R&D fabrication facility.
  • Proven experience in the development of processes for III-V materials
  • Broad process engineering expertise, with hands-on experience (>5 years experience in, and demonstrated development of) across key fabrication tools and processes in at least five areas e.g. etch, deposition, lithography, wet processing, metrology etc.
  • Proven ability to train and mentor cleanroom users (e.g., PhD students and researchers) on tool operation and process development.
  • Familiarity with electronic workflow systems for process and documentation control for Safety and Quality purposes
  • Prior involvement in external customer-focused projects, with examples of delivering solutions to meet project or operational requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills, including examples of managing competing demands, meeting deadlines, and maintaining compliance with quality and safety standards.

  • Experience managing or supervising engineering teams, even informally, with examples of setting goals and tracking performance.
  • Excellent communication skills, demonstrated through customer interaction, reporting, and guiding teams.
  • A track record of driving continuous improvement and implementing innovative solutions to operational challenges.
  • Experience maintaining and optimizing processes and equipment, including standardization of workflows and troubleshooting.
  • A demonstrated ability to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing across technical teams.
