Starting Salary: £41,150 rising to £46,147 per annum through annual increments
being paid each year. (Pro rata for part time applicants)

Job Description

This is a fantastic opportunity to join and lead the experienced and technical North-East Wales
Environmental Assessment and Advice Team (EAAT).

The EAAT are multifunctional monitoring teams that deliver monitoring and survey programmes,
expert assessment, and advice to support national and local evidence needs on environmental
status to inform decision making.

Your team will be responsible for delivering national monitoring programmes, as well as
responding to and coordinating local monitoring requirements in relation to these key
specialist areas:

• Freshwater quality
• Freshwater ecology
• Freshwater and migratory fisheries
• Bathing Water Quality
• Terrestrial habitats and species
• Earth Science

Accountable for the delivery of monitoring activities, you will work closely with a Programme
Manager to plan and track delivery.

Developing and maintaining relationships is a key part of the role. You’ll work with key
internal and external stakeholders to ensure monitoring programmes are delivered.

You will play a key role in the design and delivery of monitoring and assessment programmes and
contribute to statutory reporting for Wales within the relevant place, ensuring the service
delivers its monitoring and assessment remit and contributes to the delivery of the NRW
Evidence Programme and SMNR.

You will be required to work closely with other operational monitoring teams such as the marine
monitoring service, EPP teams, People and Places Teams and Environment Teams to ensure place
driven and national obligations are met

Knowledge and experience of the following: 

1. A first or second-class degree (or equivalent) in a biological, environmental science or
   relevant experience in discipline.
2. Experience of managing a (multidisciplinary) team delivering environmental monitoring,
   assessment and reporting.
3. Coaching, mentoring and staff development skills.
4. Ability to communicate effectively, explaining issues and gaining support by influencing,
   particularly with key stakeholders, and at senior level.
5. Extensive knowledge and experience in environmental monitoring and assessment with a
   recognised specialism in either terrestrial ecology, freshwater quality/ecology or fisheries.
6. Experience of managing budgets.
7. Project management skills.
8. Knowledge and experience of regulatory and enforcement processes.
