Job DescriptionDuration:Temporary contract post, the indicative duration of which is 8 months, subject to contract. A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.A Panel may also be formed from this competition for similar permanent vacancies that may arise.Background:Kildalton is the largest Teagasc college and a leading provider of training in Agriculture, Horticulture and Equine Studies in Ireland with over 1,300 students attending courses every year. In addition to providing QQI accredited courses at levels 5 and 6 Kildalton College also provides courses at levels 7 and 8 with the South East Technological University (formerly WIT) making the college a progressive learning facility in the South East. The equine unit consists of an indoor and two outdoor arenas, all weather cross country track, stable blocks, tack rooms, a horse walker and a breeding enterprise. With some 50 horses available for practical work, equine students get excellent training in the care and management of horses, handling of young horses, and horse riding.
The appointee will join a team of equine staff responsible for development and delivery of the equine training programmes at the college.Job Objectives

  • Preparation and delivery of lectures and practical training.
  • Preparation of assessment papers in accordance with QQI guidelines.
  • Assessment of skills and correction of assignments and exam scripts.
  • Delivery of training up to and including BHS II and HSI Level 2.
  • Managing health, safety and welfare on the Equine Unit.
  • Breaking and training of young horses.
  • Managing and maintaining high standards of stable management within the enterprise.
  • Organising and supervising Practical Learning Period placements.
  • Supporting the management of the equine enterprise at Kildalton College.
  • Implementing quality assurance procedures and meeting verification requirements.
  • Updating and developing course material.
  • Participating in course reviews and developing new training programmes.
  • Promoting Teagasc and Kildalton College through open days, one to one meetings, school visits and the media.
  • Co-operating and liaising with Teagasc Advisory and Research colleagues.
  • Co-ordinating and organising public events.
  • To assist management and administrative staff in achieving good governance and risk management through co-operation and adherence to administrative procedures and practices.
  • To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service charter and action plan through adherence to best practice protocols.
  • Managing health, safety and welfare of students.
  • To maintain responsibility for own development and updating through active participation in PMDS.
  • To assist management and administrative staff in achieving good governance and risk management through co-operation and adherence to administrative procedures and practices.
  • To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.
  • Take responsibility for the marketing of services and contract with clients consistent with the achievement of the area income targets.
  • Take responsibility for the marketing of training programmes.
  • Liaison with relevant stakeholders in the industry and education sectors.
  • Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.

Skills RequirementEssentialDesirableQualifications

  • Relevant level 8 degree with a minimum of BHS Stage III Coach Qualification or equivalent or HSI Level 1 Coaching

Knowledge/Skills

  • Technically up to date in the areas of equine nutrition, breeding, stud management, horse welfare and financial management
  • Strong communication and leadership skills

Eligibility

  • This is an open public competition. Should a current serving Teagasc staff member be successful in their application through open public competition for this post, their current contract of employment with Teagasc will come to an end on taking up this post.
