Executive Dean of Social Sciences

Nottingham Trent University

About the Role

Nottingham Trent University’s (NTU’s) current strategy – University, reimagined – demonstrates our commitment to doing the right thing for our people, our communities and our environment. We are taking bold and distinctive steps to drive even greater excellence. Our academic Schools are critical in realising this vision. Following the announcement of her retirement in summer 2024 of the current post holder, Professor Sara Owen, we are seeking to recruit an exceptional Executive Dean of Social Sciences to lead that School.

The School of Social Sciences at NTU is recognised nationally and internationally for delivering theoretically informed and applied research. We foster a culture that values the diversity of all our communities and publicises and celebrates excellence in all we do. We maintain a vibrant and inclusive learning and teaching environment that is grounded in scholarship, research, and professional practice.

The School is broad, and spans a range of disciplines, including Politics, International Relations and Sociology; Criminology and Criminal Justice; Psychology; Social Work, Care and Community; the Nottingham Institute of Education and the Institute of Health and Allied Professions. By connecting these disciplines in impactful and innovative ways we seek to engender a vibrant and inclusive learning and teaching environment grounded in scholarship, research, and professional practice. Through well-developed partnerships and a sustained focus on external engagement, our staff and students shape civic, cultural and social life.

A superb strategic leader, with exceptional credentials in their field, our new Executive Dean will bring the clarity and creativity of vision and proven track record of delivery to ensure our future success. Reporting directly to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Development and Performance), and forming a key part of the University Leadership and Extended University Executive Teams, they will also contribute to the ongoing development of one of the UK’s fastest-rising universities; ensuring we maintain our place at the forefront of academic excellence and innovation. If you have the insights, experience and ambition we are looking for, we would be keen to hear from you.
