Junior Professor Chair – (tenure track) in statistical genomics, Starting academic year 2024
Offer DescriptionInstitution strategyUBO (University of Bretagne Occidentale, Brest) has developed a research strategy that emphasizes fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly between the fields of digital technology, mathematics, and health. This approach aims to create ambitious projects that achieve both national and international recognition. By focusing on the interfaces between these domains, UBO seeks to leverage the strengths of each area to address complex health-related challenges, thereby advancing our understanding and treatment of diseases.Strategy of host laboratoryUMR 1078 Genetics, Functional Genomics, and Biotechnologies develops a translational research program aimed at better understanding the role of genes in diseases and using this knowledge to propose new treatments better tailored to patients. The unit brings together geneticists, statisticians, bioinformaticians, epidemiologists, and microbiome specialists. This combination of expertise within a single laboratory is quite unique in France and places us in a very favorable position to develop ambitious projects. The national and international visibility of the laboratory in the field of epidemiological and statistical genetics is excellent, which has led us to be chosen as coordinators of Inserm’s GOLD program on the impact of genomic variability on health and diseases, and as the principal investigator of the POPGEN general population sequencing project of the France Genomic Medicine Plan, allowing us to participate in the European “Genome of Europe” initiative. This recruitment will strengthen the laboratory’s position as a leader in statistical genetics in France.Summary of the scientific projectWith the development of new genome sequencing technologies, it is now possible to characterize the genomes of large samples of individuals and relate observed variations to phenotypic differences. Besides DNA base variations or structural variations, these technologies also allow for the study of gene expression levels and the characterization of microbiomes in individuals’ various organs to explore potential interactions between the host genome and the microbiomes. However, the analysis of these genomic data is still limited by available statistical methods that do not allow for optimal exploitation of this massive data in all its dimensions. The project aims to address this challenge by proposing new statistical analysis methods, particularly targeting the study of interactions between the host’s genetic variations and its microbiome. The developed methods will need to account for a longitudinal dimension of data acquired through repeated measures over time. They will be applied to salivary sequencing data generated for the POPGEN pilot project of the France Genomic Medicine 2025 plan on volunteers from the Constances cohort. This is an ambitious project at the interface of statistical modeling and genomics, addressing an important question with innovative approaches. These approaches and the analysis tools that will be developed will allow for the integration of multi-scale data and can also be deployed in many fields, demonstrating the project’s cross-disciplinary scope.Summary of the teaching projectThe teaching project is part of the UBO Master’s program in Biology-Health, focusing on a module of teaching statistics and bioinformatics applied to genomics and “big data” in health. Developing the expertise of biology students in this area has become essential to enable them to analyze the numerous datasets now made available internationally as part of open science initiatives. The content of the teaching will include: methods of descriptive statistics for data visualization, multivariate analysis, longitudinal data analysis, and an overview of major databases available in the context of international projects (UKBiobank, AllOfUs, France Genomic Medicine Plan, etc.). Practical cases will be studied during computer lab sessions, and a project will be proposed to students with tutoring sessions.Financing :Total financed by Junior Professor Chair (including ANR)475 K€Co-financing50 000 €Total project525 K€This includes a salary for 5 years (3000k€ net per month – gross salary 3 682 €), 200k€ from ANR and 10k€ per year from the laboratory.Scientific disseminationThe work will be presented at international congresses on statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology (European Mathematical Genetics Meeting, International Genetic Epidemiology Society conference, JOBIM, etc.) and genetics congresses (American Society of Human Genetics, European Society of Human Genetics). Publications will also be made in the leading journals in the field (Genetic Epidemiology, Bioinformatics, Statistics in Medicine) and even in general journals depending on the results of the data analysis.Open scienceThe methods developed in the project will be made available to the scientific community in the form of R packages to enable their use in other projects and to explore the role of gene-environment interactions in various pathologies, in order to better understand these diseases and individual variability of expression, the first step towards more personalized medicine.Science and societyUMR 1078 participates in science festivals and regularly welcomes high school students and patient associations as part of public communication actions organized at the local or national level. The work conducted within this project will be presented during these events.IndicateursPublications and communications at international congressesMonitoring of software developmentEstablishment of national and international collaborationsRequirementsResearch Field Medical sciences » Epidemiology Education Level PhD or equivalentResearch Field Medical sciences » Other Education Level PhD or equivalentSkills/QualificationsStatistical genetics, genomics, population genetics, genetic epidemiology, multi-omics, microbiome, gene-environment interactionLanguages ENGLISH Level ExcellentLanguages FRENCH Level BasicResearch Field Medical sciences » EpidemiologyMedical sciences » Other Years of Research Experience More than 10Additional InformationBenefits

Recruitment is based on a research and teaching project led by a holder of a doctorate or equivalent diploma. Each laureate will sign a research and teaching agreement with the institution as well as a pre-tenure contract, the duration of which may not be less than three years and may not exceed six years. Funding for the CPJ will be provided by the ANR (National Research Agency) to the tune of 200K euros for each establishment benefiting from a chair, which can be supplemented by additional funding (Region, etc.). This must make it possible, in particular, to take charge of the financing of doctoral students, post docs, IT contractors, as well as to contribute to the operation of the project (purchase of equipment, missions and travel) The remuneration of the winner is freely fixed by the establishment on the basis of a minimum gross annual remuneration of 41,331 euros (IM 735). A ministerial order fixes each year by establishment and by theme the openings of CPJ. A call for applications is then made by the establishments. When looking for positions, junior professorships will be distinguished from others by the article of recruitment (CPJ). The application form is to be submitted in the Titles and Works section of the document submission when compiling your application. The job offer is on the Galaxy portal ( , through which candidates are to apply, filling in their “Fiche de candidature CPJ” (in French), translation of which we give here in an informative purpuse.Selected candidates will be evaluated during their audition on a presentation summary of their research work in a didactic format and over a period of time allocated, accessible to a Master’s student. The candidate will be assessed on his level scientific, its ability to quickly set up funded projects (ANR, ERC, etc.), its adaptation to the profile but also his ability to teach.Additional commentsProject duration: 5 years starting 01/10/2024 Website for additional job detailsWork Location(s)Number of offers available 1 Company/Institute Université de Bretagne Occidentale Country France City Brest Postal Code 29200 Street 22 avenue Camille Desmoulins GeofieldWhere to apply WebsiteContact CityBrest WebsiteStreet3 rue des Archives CS 93837 E-Mailconcours.ec@univ-brest.frSTATUS: EXPIRED
