Job description

Offer DescriptionLa Rochelle Université is recruiting a junior temporary associate professor in section 60 – Civil engineering. Keywords: Civil engineeringConditions of employment

  • Fixed-term contract from 1 October 2025 to 31 August 2026, renewable
  • Salary: approximately €2,400 gross per month before any seniority taken into account
  • Diploma requirement : PhD

Working environmentWithin a higher education and research landscape that has been profoundly reshaped over the last decade, La Rochelle University has chosen to specialize its research around a distinctive scientific positioning, by devoting its scientific and academic potential to societal and environmental issues. This strategic orientation led to the creation of the Sustainable Urban Intelligent Coastline Institute (LUDI), operational since September 1, 2021. Bringing together all the laboratories, doctoral students and master’s programs, this institute aims to address the multiple scientific issues induced by the anthropisation of the coastline, by promoting decompartmentalized and interdisciplinary approaches. It develops a proactive policy of innovation and dissemination of results, while ensuring the ethical foundations and scientific integrity of the activities carried out. The creation of the LUDI Institute is part of a context framed by two structuring projects: on the one hand, the European university EU-CONEXUS, a network bringing together partner European universities sharing a common specialty, and on the other hand, the CampusInnov initiative, intended to develop the culture of innovation in both education and research. The position is to be filled within the Sustainable Urban Intelligent Coastline Institute ( ) – LaSIE UMR CNRS 7356 laboratory and IUT – Génie Civil et Construction Durable department.Teaching activitiesThe IUT’s Civil Engineering and Sustainable Construction department offers a 3-year BUT program for students, whom come from the former Poitou-Charentes region and the Vendée. It offers 4 possible courses (Building Works, Public Works, Rehabilitation of Environmental Performance of Buildings, Design Office), with the possibility of work-study starting in the second year. The program is closely linked to the local construction companies, not only through work-study programs, but also through internships, regular meetings with companies and the alumni network. The candidate will participate in the operational tasks assumed by the teaching team and take part in the teaching or administrative responsibilities relating to the bachelor’s degrees (responsibility for and coordination of teaching, diploma responsibilities, participation in juries and development boards, chairing juries, etc.) and, where appropriate, the management of training programs. He/she will be responsible for the pedagogical organization of the courses he/she teaches (CM, TD, TP, Accompanied Work). For all the courses concerned, he/she will develop an innovative teaching approach based on resolving problems and conducting projects. The ability to teach in English is desirable. The candidate will be part of a team of 20 teachers and lecturers and will participate in the training of 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students. The teaching areas will relate to construction stability (knowledge of Eurocodes will be a plus), in the form of lectures, tutorials and practical work. He or she will also be involved in teaching site organization and technology for buildings, public works and engineering structures, with an eye to sustainable construction.Teaching department management: Jean-Philippe MASSON –Teaching department:Research activitiesThe Laboratory of Engineering Sciences for the Environment: LaSIE UMR 7356 CNRS – La Rochelle Université brings together a broad spectrum of skills with integrated approaches from the atomic scale to materials, buildings and their environment at different scales of time and space. The lab thus establishes a continuum from the development of mathematical tools to applications and patent registration, via numerical and experimental models and simulations.LaSIE is divided into four research teams:– Team E1: ‘Mathematical and numerical methods for transfer phenomena’ (M2N)– Team E2: ‘Sustainable buildings and cities: energy and quality of living environments’ (BVD)– Team E3: ‘Transfer, degradation and recycling of building materials’ (TDVM)– Team E4: ‘Durability, microstructure, protection and coatings’ (DMPR)The position to be filled is assigned to the research team ‘Transfer, degradation and recycling of materials’ to develop activities linked to reactive mass transfers in building materials and their effects in terms of the degradation and recycling of materials and the behavior of structures and buildings (service life, recycling of materials). The candidate will be expected to participate in the team’s activities on these themes of mass transfers (ionic and/or molecular) in porous media such as construction materials, taking into account their strong heterogeneity and their evolving properties (deterioration or improvement of their potential for use following changes in their chemical, physical and mechanical properties). Contributions mainly in the modelling of reactive transfers and an ability of teamwork are expected. The target applications are civil engineering structures, including sea-front structures and, more generally, the current problems of recycling deconstruction materials and reducing their environmental impact. The team’s research project consists of developing innovative modelling and experimental techniques for this type of transfer on the scale of porous materials from the atomic scale (DFT techniques, solid H1 NMR, X-ray tomography) with the aim of generalizing to larger scales in order to optimize the service life of structures and to broaden the potential for recovery and recycling of deconstruction materials while reducing the environmental impact of materials in the construction sector in general (e.g. carbon dioxide capture, materials used in the construction industry, etc.).He/she will also be required to work within the team on research activities relating more generally to the sustainability and valorization of materials, as well as their design (development of eco-materials), particularly in modelling.Research contact:: Xavier FEAUGAS (Director) –Contact for Research profile: Karim AÏT-MOKHTAR (Deputy-Director) –Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsResearch Field Engineering » Civil engineering Education Level PhD or equivalentSkills/QualificationsResearch profileR2: recognized researcher, PhD holder, not yet fully independentThe candidate must be part of a research dynamic by providing disciplinary richness while having a desire for openness and decompartmentalization, and an approach open to actors in the socio-economic world with a view to contributing to the development of innovation.
