1. SUMMARYWithin NATO’s International Staff (IS), the Executive Management (EM) Division has the lead role in the overall management of the NATO HQ. The EM Division covers the following directorates: HQ Support and Transformation (HQST), Human Resources (HR), and Information, Communications and Technology Management (ICTM).Within HQST, the Translation Service provides translations for the Secretary General, the North Atlantic Council, NATO committees and all of the entities of the IS.Within the French Section, the Lead, Translation Quality Assurance is responsible for evaluating translation quality for the Translation Service and ensuring a quality assurance process that is consistent with internationally accepted requirements for translation services. The incumbent assists the Head of the French Section in ensuring the smooth functioning and the day-to-day management of the French Section by evaluating the work of translators and revisers, and ensures that the quality level of the translations is fit for purpose. The incumbent may also deputize for the Head of French Section as required.2. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCEESSENTIALThe incumbent must:

  • have successfully completed recognized university-level training in translation or hold a degree in a relevant discipline awarded by an institution of acknowledged standing and complemented by proven translation capabilities;
  • have at least 7 years’ experience as a reviser in a translation service, of which at least 4 years’ experience in translation quality assurance or a relevant field;
  • have a proven ability to produce translations and revisions which are of high quality in terms of grammar, style and syntax and extremely faithful to the sense or spirit of the original, including on technical subjects;
  • have managerial experience, specifically in training and supervising linguistic staff and guaranteeing the quality of translations delivered to customers;
  • possess the soft skills required to coach and mentor colleagues;
  • possess strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • have knowledge of the specific requirements of translation and revision processes;
  • have broad general knowledge and be familiar with major topical issues;
  • be detail-oriented and have strong analytical skills;
  • have a perfect command of French (level VI – Proficiency) as their mother tongue / or language of education and a very good knowledge of English (level V – Advanced);
  • be prepared to work outside normal office hours when workload or urgent work so requires.

DESIRABLEThe following would be considered assets:

  • experience working in the translation service of an international organization;
  • expertise in general IT tools and Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT), Quality Assurance (QA) and Machine Translation (MT) tools;
  • managerial training;
  • certifications in quality assurance, translation standards, or project management;
  • experience in translation management systems;
  • knowledge of specialized fields related to the business of NATO;
  • ability to assist in the quality checking of translations from and/or into the main non-NATO languages.

3. MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIESOrganizational EfficienciesUpdate working methods and internal processes in a continuous effort to increase efficiency with regards to quality assurance and create quality assurance standards consistent with ISO standards. Develop language quality metrics. Ensure that appropriate quality-control measures are established and applied. Monitor and assess the quality of tools and services and take appropriate action based on findings. Keep abreast of subjects and IT innovations that are relevant for translation quality assurance.Planning and ExecutionReview and evaluate revisions of translated documents within the French Section of the Translation Service to ensure linguistic accuracy, quality and adherence to customer specifications, including internal and international standards, as well as compliance with Translation Service guidelines.People ManagementLead, plan, direct and supervise the work of the assigned staff, while driving performance and encouraging teamwork and cooperation. Provide effective coaching and offer robust guidance to revisers and translators in order to improve the quality of translations. Identify training needs for revisers and translators to ensure their skills are kept up to date and reflect the latest best practices. Provide regular feedback to ensure continuous improvement and harmonization across translations. Participate in people management activities across the Division, as directed.Stakeholder ManagementEstablish and maintain continuous contact with Translation Service customers to determine the right level of quality/speed for their requirements, meeting as fully as possible their needs and expectations.Perform any other related duty as assigned.4. INTERRELATIONSHIPSThe incumbent reports to the Head, French Section and collaborates with linguists (revisers, translators and terminologists) and must be prepared to work closely with other International Staff members as required.Direct reports: 14Indirect reports: N/a5. 6. CONTRACTContract to be offered to the successful applicant (if non-seconded): Definite duration contract of three years’ duration; possibility of an indefinite duration contract thereafter.Contract clause applicable:
In accordance with the NATO Civilian Personnel Regulations, the successful candidate will receive a definite duration contract of three years, which may be followed by an indefinite duration contract.If the successful applicant is seconded from the national administration of one of NATO’s member States, a 3-year definite duration contract will be offered, which may be renewed for a further period of up to 3 years subject to the agreement of the national authority concerned. The maximum period of service in the post as a seconded staff member is six years.Serving staff will be offered a contract in accordance with the NATO Civilian Personnel Regulations.7.
