Description of primary duties and responsibilities: Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Studies at Fayetteville State University offers B.A. and M.A. programs in Sociology and a B.S. program in Interdisciplinary Studies, with minors in Africana Studies and Sociology, and a graduate certificate in Applied Sociology.
Description of Work Continued: Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Studies at Fayetteville State University invites applications for a one-year full-time lecturer/adjunct assistant professor of sociology position to begin August 2023. The position may be renewable contingent upon satisfactory performance and budgetary approval. We seek applicants with a commitment to excellence in teaching effectiveness and the ability to teach a variety of sociology courses at undergraduate and graduate levels in both in-class and online settings. In particular, the successful applicant is expected to teach in-class sections of SOCI 150 (The Global Society) for students at Cumberland International Early College High School located on the university campus in the fall semester and SOCI 210 (Principles of Sociology) on a regular basis. The standard teaching load for the fixed-term faculty is 12 credit hours (four courses) per semester.
The department currently offers all upper-division and graduate-level courses online in Canvas. The successful applicant must complete the Canvas online faculty teaching orientation offered by the Office of Faculty Development in compliance with the NC-SARA (National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements) requirements.
The successful applicant will be part of a cohesive team of culturally diverse faculty members who work closely as mentors with students in our undergraduate and graduate programs. Also, the successful applicant is expected to serve on departmental, college-wide, and university-wide committees, and to participate in recruitment events.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • An earned master’s degree in sociology to be appointed as lecturer.
  • An earned Ph.D. in sociology to be appointed as adjunct assistant professor.
  • A strong commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • The ability to teach in-class sections of SOCI 150 (The Global Society) for students in the Early College High School.
  • The ability to teach SOCI 210 (Principles of Sociology).
Knowledge skills and abilities:
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Online and in-class teaching experience.
  • Experience with online course development and instruction in Canvas or other online learning management system.
