This full-time post is available from 1st September 2024 to 31st August 2026 in the Department of Classics, Ancient History, Religion and Theology with an open specialism in the field of ancient history.

The role

You will join a large and dynamic department that offers a range of single and joint-honours programmes in Classics, Classical Studies and Ancient History tailored to students from all backgrounds. We are proud of our commitment to offer training in ancient languages at all levels, with large numbers taking our beginners courses every year, and of our continual commitment to expand the range and diversity of our research and teaching beyond the traditional core of the discipline. Our research is widely recognised for its commitment to interdisciplinarity and engagement with the wider world and we are home to a thriving community of postgraduate students. We seek a new colleague who shares our commitment to inspirational teaching, to fostering and amplifying diverse and marginalised voices within Classics and Ancient History, to shaping a more inclusive discipline, and to the benefits that our discipline can bring to the wider world.

You will support the delivery of teaching across a range of programmes within the Department of Classics, Ancient History, Religion and Theology. This will include the design, development and production of teaching and learning material and the delivery of teaching across a range of ancient history modules up to MA level. This is likely to include the following modules: Roman History: Problems and Sources; Greek History: Problems and Sources; Ancient Sources (Written Evidence): Tyranny.

About you

You will:

  • Possess sufficient breadth or depth of specialist and core knowledge in the discipline, demonstrated by a PhD or equivalent in Classics and Ancient History, to develop teaching programmes, and teach and support learning on ancient history modules
  • Use a range of delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students
  • Participate in and develop external networks to build relationships for future activities, and contribute to student recruitment and outreach work
  • Have evidence of excellent teaching, identified by peer review, and have made an impact at discipline level beyond your own teaching
  • Be expected to work towards Fellow of the HEA status, where appropriate, and attend formal CPD relating to this

Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of this role.

What we can offer you:

  • Freedom (and the support) to pursue your intellectual interests and to work creatively across disciplines
  • Support teams that understand the University wide teaching goals and partner with our academics accordingly
  • An Innovation, Impact and Business directorate that works closely with our academics providing specialist support for external engagement and development
  • Our Exeter Academic initiative supports high performing academics to achieve their potential and develop their career
  • A multitude of staff benefits including sector leading benefits around maternity, adoption and shared parental leave (up to 26wks full pay), Paternity leave (up to 6wks full pay), and a Fertility Treatment Policy
  • A beautiful campus set in the heart of stunning Devon
