Bangor University School of Health Sciences is offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced lecturer to join our academic team to support the bilingual delivery of the midwifery programme. The intention of this post is to sustain and further develop the programme’s Welsh medium provision which enables students to study a meaningful part of their course in Welsh and access the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Incentive Scholarships. The post holder will work with the lead for bilingual learning to enhance the bilingual delivery of our wider health professional education provision.

The ability to communicate in Welsh is essential for this post.

Candidates will have current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a registered midwife. The School of Health Sciences values the partnership we have with students and prioritises support and encouragement for all our students across their differing programmes. The postholder will be based within the midwifery academic team with a remit of supporting and contributing to the wider School’s inter professional modules and supporting provision of the Welsh medium for students. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to contribute to teaching and learning across the School portfolio, specifically but not limited to Midwifery undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Successful candidates will be expected to commence as soon as possible.

Successful candidates should possess an Undergraduate Degree in Midwifery.

This role will be located on campus at Bangor. Through our Dynamic Working framework , there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.

Purpose of the Job

• To support the provision and inclusion of Welsh medium teaching provision within the undergraduate midwifery modules at Bangor University. The intention is to enable eligible students who start the programme to access the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol [CCC] Incentive Scholarship. The post holder will also enhance our teaching provision for students who do not access the Scholarship by supporting them to access elements of their health professional education bilingually or through the medium of Welsh

• To develop teaching materials or resources, with a specific focus on developing resources and expertise in providing OSCE / clinical skills training and assessment in the medium of Welsh specifically for the practice modules.

• Facilitate a variety of student assessments, and associated marking, in the medium of Welsh

• To be a module coordinator or contribute to module co-ordination, with a focus on Welsh medium provision.

• To support the use of the Welsh language within the practice placement environment • To support Welsh medium provision across programme Open Days, Selection Days, and wider engagement events

• To always provide the highest quality pastoral and academic support to undergraduate students

• To undertake administrative duties as designated by the Head of School

 


Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching duties will include:

 

Grade 7:

• Support the School’s bilingualism lead to support Welsh medium provision within the midwifery modules and support Welsh medium learning.

• Plan, prepare and deliver Welsh medium / bilingual lectures and tutorials responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds, learning styles and class sizes.

• Motivate students to proactively engage in their learning and provide meaningful and constructive feedback on the quality of their work.

• Keep abreast of new professional, educational and related social, economic and technological developments in Midwifery and Welsh medium provision.

• Be personal tutor to undergraduate students, providing the highest quality, consistent, advice, guidance, and support.

• Work with the midwifery team to contribute to the development of new programmes and undertaking role of module coordinator or contributing to module co-ordination.

• Maintain and develop scholarly activities in line with University and College strategies. • Ensure adherence to organisational and professional body (i.e. NMC) requirements in all aspects of academic work, and in personal professional development.

• Engage in scholarly, professional and improvement-related activities around midwifery education in partnership with students, local stakeholders and service users. • Contribute to the growth and improvement of the practice learning circuit capacity and quality, and support students’ learning in practice.

• Actively engage in strategic and project-related activities that maximise student engagement, and that mitigate the risks of attrition

• Lead and support the development of new modules, and the re-design and improvement of existing modules.

 

Grade 8 :

• Lead on Welsh medium provision within the midwifery modules and support Welsh medium learning.

• Plan, prepare and deliver Welsh medium / bilingual lectures and tutorials responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds, learning styles and class sizes.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Administrative and Wider Contribution duties will include:

 

• Participate in the student recruitment and induction procedures of the School, including Bangor University Open Days, UCAS offer holder days and Welcome Week.

• Contribute to the marketing of programmes by participating in School and College link activities and other marketing initiatives.

• To contribute to the promotion and external profile of the School through widened contributions

• Contribute to the School’s management and participate in the administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (e.g. organisation of exams, contribute to accreditation/QA procedures (if module co-ordinator).

• Undertake an active role in mentoring less experienced members of staff within the College/School.

• Undertake other administrative duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School (e.g. membership of School boards and task groups, addressing/supporting undergraduate and postgraduate student experience, contributing to community engagement).

• Through the clinical and other partnership roles, disseminate information about the School’s portfolio, and capture intelligence about stakeholders’ future education and training requirements.

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• To participate in performance review and developmental activities.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

 

Essential :

• Undergraduate degree in Midwifery

• Professional registration with the appropriate regulatory body (ie. the Nursing and Midwifery Council)

 

Desirable :

• Higher Degree (MSc or PhD) in midwifery or a related subject. (grade 8)

• Higher Education teaching qualification. (3 years previous teaching experience for conversation to HEA Fellowship essential for grade 8)

 

Experience/Knowledge

 

Essential :

• Relevant experience as a midwife.

• Experience in a specialty or focused area of midwifery practice.

• Experience in midwifery education.

• Experience of working as module lead or similar. (for Grade 8)

• Experience of teaching up to Level 7. (for Grade 8)

• Experience of supervision to Master’s level. (for Grade 8)

• Evidence of scholarship relating to learning and teaching through publication of books, articles and/or papers in academic journals and good / innovative pedagogic practice (for Grade 8)
