Lecturer in Small Animal Clinical Skills (Learning, Teaching & Scholarship Track)

We have an exciting opportunity to appoint a Lecturer in Small Animal Clinical Skills to support the delivery of teaching within the School of Biodiversity One Health and Veterinary Medicine with a specific focus on veterinary clinical skills teaching to BVMS students. You will be expected to contribute to teaching, assessment, feedback, and administrative processes associated with undergraduate veterinary students.

We welcome applications from candidates who hold a Veterinary degree, registered with the RCVS before commencing employment and a proven track record in small animal teaching (including assessments) or extensive experience in these clinical areas.

Veterinary Medicine has been rated 1st in the UK Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide. It has an excellent international reputation in teaching, clinical services and research and is accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), the European Association of Establishments of Veterinary Education (EAEVE) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

Job Purpose

Support the delivery of teaching within the School of Biodiversity One Health and Veterinary Medicine with a specific focus on veterinary clinical skills teaching to BVMS students. The post holder will be expected to contribute to teaching, assessment, feedback, and administrative processes associated with undergraduate veterinary students.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. To deliver clinical and professional skills training in a variety of settings, e.g. lecture theatres, the clinical skills facility, teaching laboratories etc.

2. To participate in the supervision of practical and/or clinical work advising on skills, methods and techniques in both the small animal clinical environment and the teaching laboratories.

3. To take responsibility for the delivery of a range of assessment activities and engage with the examination process as appropriate, providing effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.

4. To undertake leadership roles (e.g. module/course leadership) and associated administrative duties within the BVMS curriculum.

5. To contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum, in a manner that supports a research led and scholarly approach to student learning.

6. To undertake administrative duties as requested by the Head of Division (or their delegate) and to lead specific initiatives to enhance the learning experience and ensure the requirements of regulatory bodies are met.

7. To participate in quality assurance and enhancement activities, curriculum review and programme re-accreditation with the University and professional bodies to ensure high quality education provision is maintained. 8. To support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.

9. To participate in the Advisor of Studies (student mentorship) Programme and assist students with difficulties.

Knowledge/Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Veterinary degree, registered with the RCVS before commencing employment.

A2 A comprehensive teaching and assessment portfolio in veterinary education or extensive experience in clinical practice.

Desirable:

B1 Further professional veterinary qualifications in relevant area.

B2 Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Skills

Essential:

C1 Expertise and clinical competence in small animal first opinion practice, corresponding to training and qualifications.

C2 Ability to provide expert advice to students, clinicians, support staff and external organisations.

C3 Excellent communication skills, both orally and written.

C4 Enthusiasm for teaching and learning.

C5 Excellent interpersonal skills and presentation skills.

C6 Time, project and people management skills.

C7 Ability to supervise and direct staff/students in the support of activities.

C8 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

C9 Self-motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.

C10 Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly.

Desirable:

D1 Evidence of scholarship

D2 Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages.

Experience 

E1 Proven track record in small animal teaching (including assessments) or extensive experience in these clinical areas.

E2 Experience of veterinary clinical or educational research.

Desirable:

F1 Experience in the delivery of teaching and practical skill training to undergraduate veterinary students (or equivalent).

F2 Experience in the delivery of clinical supervision of undergraduate students within the clinical environment.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 8, £48,350 – £56,021 per annum.

This post is full time and open ended.
