Lecturer or Senior Teaching Fellow in Maritime Engineering
Are you passionate about developing smart, sustainable, and resilient engineering solutions? Do you have expertise in an area relevant to the study of Maritime Engineering? Can you inspire others to address society’s future needs? Then the School of Engineering is the place to make a difference. A world-renowned centre for education, research, and enterprise, we offer brand new, world-class facilities, a vibrant academic community and excellent collaborative opportunities.
Due to its reputation for excellence in education and research the School of Engineering has partnered with Harbin Engineering University (HEU), China to deliver a Joint Education Institute at HEU. Part of your role will be to help shape and deliver this exciting initiative.
You will join our world-renown Maritime Engineering Science Group. We are seeking experience in teaching all aspects of ship design to undergraduate students, especially in the rapidly evolving area of energy efficiency technologies, future fuels and decarbonisation.
If you are appointed as a Lecturer, you will have access to our excellent specialist maritime testing facilities and to the wider facilities in the School, and opportunities to forge collaborations across the Faculty of Engineering and Physics Science as you develop your career with us. Research interests in topics closely aligned to modern ship design are particularly relevant. You will be fully supported to develop the educational aspects of the role and encouraged to offer a high quality and exciting experience to our engineering students.
Senior Teaching Fellows, will be supported to develop innovative approaches to engineering education, working in collaboration with others across the university such as our Centre for Higher Education Practice. Our opportunities for career development and promotion for teaching specialists match those for our more research-focussed colleagues. Your contribution will shape the direction of our engineering programmes, by inspiring our students to address the big engineering challenges in a sustainable manner.
To succeed in one of these challenging roles, you will need a relevant PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications and experience), and a track-record of published research or of impactful education development. If you don’t have a recognised, HE teaching qualification yet, we will support you in your first year to achieve this. You are highly organised, with strong communication skills, and you’ll be ready to manage and motivate a team. This is a full-time permanent post with a requirement to spend several months per year working in Harbin, China at our Joint Education Institute with HEU. During the annual period spent at HEU, you will undertake teaching, student support and programme management roles in partnership with staff from HEU and a small team of our other staff in similar roles to this. You will be joined periodically by members of our ‘flying faculty’ teaching team. Accommodation in China will be provided free of charge during your stay. Duties during the period when you are not in China will be managed to give you every opportunity to meet your career ambitions.
Join us and we’ll encourage you to shape a role that’s tailored to your interests and makes the most of your unique perspective. We believe equality and diversity are fundamental to creativity and innovation, in turn enabling us to develop and grow towards our strategic ambitions.
