Locum Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics with sub-specialty expertise in Major TraumaIn order to support the Trusts Major Trauma Centre in the Yorkshire and Humber region, we are looking to appoint a Locum Orthopaedic Major Trauma Consultant. This is a 10 PA locum appointment and the post will be available from November 2024 for a period of 12 months.The post will maintain our established team of Consultants within the Trauma & Orthopaedic department at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The successful applicants will work at the centre of a regional network that covers nearly 4 million people (adults & children) in our Major Trauma Centre, including dedicated major trauma ward, theatres and critical care facilities.As a natural hub for Yorkshire, and with excellent connections to all parts of the North of England, we have worked hard to bring a logical alignment to patient services within well equipped, modern facilities which will see services dedicated to helping critically ill patients all located together in the Jubilee Wing at Leeds General Infirmary.The successful applicant must possess the FRCS (In Trauma and Orthopaedics) or equivalent, have completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) in T&O and be on the specialist register or be within six months of being admitted to the register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK.The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience in Trauma & Orthopaedics to complement the high profile service in Leeds. Applicants should have established skills in the management of major trauma. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part-timeAbout usLEEDS MAJOR TRAUMA CENTRE (MTC) SERVICELeeds General Infirmary opened as a level 1 trauma centre on 2nd April 2013. Due to its regional remit it provides responsibility of care to a population of almost 3 million. The support encompasses all aspects of trauma care included attendance at trauma calls, co-ordination and prioritisation of patient care, and emergency admissions as well as emergency operating. Each morning the team has a Multi-disciplinary team meeting to discuss all major trauma patients within the hospital. Throughout the day the MTC centre receives acute admissions from around the region. Our Major Trauma Nurse specialists co-ordinate the care of our patients as soon as they come through the door into the emergency department. They then follow the patient pathway through the different levels of care that are required supporting both the patient and their relatives up until and beyond discharge.The Network was established in 2013 to bring together Major Trauma Care across West Yorkshire and is a collaboration between ourselves and five Trauma Units in other hospitals in the region. This ensures all patients that require major trauma services have access to the right level of care at the right time, in the right environment.We have invested a further £8m over the years to enhance facilities, including the creation of a dedicated MTC ward and theatre, and enhanced staffing.As well as being the second largest MTC in the country we have consistently remained in the top three for outcomes. Over the last three years, Leeds MTC has been leading the way nationally in the management of major limb trauma requiring combined plastic and orthopaedic surgery which is a huge achievement.Junior Medical StaffWithin Major trauma and General trauma and orthopaedics there are 16 SpRs supported through the Yorkshire deanery from ST3-ST8 and 5 Trust grade registrar posts providing support on a registrar rota. There are 3 Core Trainee grades and 5 trust grades and 12 FY doctors to support this rota. In addition there are two speciality Orthopaedic posts within the service establishment.
