Are you interested in supporting the personal and professional development of medical students at Leeds? Do you have experience of mentoring or coaching, teaching undergraduate medical students on placement, healthcare delivery, leadership or audit and service improvement?
The SAFER MEDIC strand of the Year 3 curriculum has been designed to equip students to view clinical situations to take account of the relevant clinical and related issues, so they can progress to deliver effective patient care. Tutors are paired with another tutor and their group for the Year 3 SAFER MEDIC sessions, which run approximately every 5 weeks on Wednesday mornings from 8.30am until 11am (usually 6 meetings in total from September to May). Tutor guides are available for all of these sessions and will be made available on appointment.
Students learn to approach each clinical encounter through the following five learning areas:
• Safety
• Awareness (self/social/cultural)
• First principles (fundamental/applied science) ► reflecting, learning
• Ethical/legal aspects
• Research/knowledge gaps
Students are then able to consider the situation as a whole in order to make the best possible management decisions. Under the guidance of their tutors they will learn to work as a group to identify, research, present and discuss these issues. This helps them approach the clinical encounter through the following framework:
• Meeting
• Examining
• Diagnosing
• Investigating
• Communicating
