We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.Morton Fellowship Royal Alexandra Hospital August 2025 – July 2028.This is a fully funded PhD post by Bowel Research UK for a candidate who is ST3 onwards. Based in the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley, this 2 – 3 year post has clinical commitments with protected research time and deanery approval.The successful candidate will work within a specialty team of their choice (colorectal, Upper GI or breast) with no more than 5 fixed clinical sessions a week. The surgical department in RAH consists of: 10 colorectal surgeons with interests in pelvic floor, colorectal cancer, minimally invasive surgery and IBD; 3 Upper GI with interests in CBD exploration/ ERCP, anti-reflux surgery and 4 breast consultants who perform oncological surgery for impalpable disease and reconstruction. There is a dedicated endoscopy suite and day surgery unit and full access to surgical simulators. In addition, there is a strong interest in education.The candidate will participate in a full shift on-call rota of approximately 1:10 (week of nights split into 4 and 3; regular day-time receiving). They will gain experience in HDU care and are assisted overnight with a dedicated FY2 in Surgical Specialties that forms part of the Hospital at Night team. The RAH is one of the busiest emergency centres in Scotland that provides lots of teaching opportunities.The candidate will be expected to perform research into emergency laparotomy and peri-operative care. RAH Surgery is an established collaborative research group with varying interests that regularly publish and present locally, nationally and internationally. In addition, they have experience in supervising all higher degrees from MSc to PhD.
