CMCC GOCO Division, located in Lecce, is looking for a new position of researcher with experience as numerical modeler, to support the research and the ocean modeling activities at global to coastal scales.
This position is for a Numerical Modeller (i.e., Post Doc, or Junior Scientist for research career at CMCC) with experiences in the fields of numerical methods for Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, good knowledge of ocean physical processes and programming skills.
The primary purpose for this position is to take on a pivotal role in the development and validation of a multi-purpose ocean general circulation model that employs unstructured-mesh methods. We require skills and capabilities in dealing with all the components of an ocean circulation model (e.g. time integration schemes, staggering of variables and discretization of operators, interpolation methods, advection schemes, linear solvers), with particular attention to the assessment of the accuracy, stability and efficiency of the developed methods. Knowledge of finite element and finite volume methods is essential for this position and familiarity with other methods is an added value. We also appreciate knowledge of methods to solve sparse linear systems. We expect, also, that the applicant is familiar with the solution of the basic problems in GFD and has good programming skills.ABOUT US

  • PhD or equivalent experience in Physics, Physical Oceanography, Applied Mathematics, Engineering or related disciplines with a strong research background in numerical methods and modelling;
  • experience in development of numerical methods applied to geophysical fluid dynamics problems;
  • experience in development and/or application of ocean circulation models preferably on unstructured meshes (structured meshes will also be considered) is highly desirable;
  • good knowledge of compiled (i.e. Fortran) and interpreted (Python, R, MatLab) programming languages;
  • knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems and scripting languages (i.e. *nix shell);
  • knowledge of parallel programming on HPC architectures;
  • fluency in English

DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
  • The appointment period will be of 24 months starting from June 2025. Contract and gross annual salary range between € 30.000 to 40.000 for Post-doc and € 38.000 – 52.000 for Junior Scientist, comprehensive of benefits, depending on qualification and experience.
  • Tenure can be granted from 2 to 4 years after being appointed as a junior researcher.
  • Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract.
  • Flexible working time as per internal policies.
  • Support during the immigration process, if needed.
