Offer DescriptionOpen PhD position: Quantum sensing using magnetoacoustic resonatorsOver the past decade, solid state defects in diamond, such as Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers have emerged as strong contenders in quantum sensing applications, owing to their sturdiness, long coherence times, and most notably very high sensitivity with respect to magnetic fields. On the other hand, Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensors have demonstrated their usefulness in a wide range of sensing applications, providing a compact, multiphysic (strain, temperature, pressure,…) and robust solution, though still far from the potential of quantum sensors in terms of sensitivity and resolution. Bridging the gap between current classical SAW sensors and quantum sensors lies in the development of an efficient and integrated transduction. The objective of this thesis is thus to extend the use of the quantum sensing capabilities of NV centers using multiphysic coupling in magnetoacoustic resonators.The first objective of the thesis resides in the technological integration of magnetoacoustic resonators (SAW and magnetoelastic thin film) with diamond structures containing defects with controlled position and density, produced and characterized in collaboration with the LSPM (Laboratoire des Sciences des Procédés et des Matériaux) and the IRCP (Institut de Recherche de Chimie Paris). The devices obtained will then be characterized using a dedicated measurement bench, developed during the thesis, in order to show the coherent control of the quantum state of single NV centers. Integrated magnetoacoustic control of NV centers has not been implemented so far, and stands for a major step towards the substitution of RF technologies, unsuitable for miniaturization and metrology at the nanoscale.The second objective lies in the development and characterization of multiphysic sensors based on this technology. Theoretical studies, corroborated by preliminary experimental results, have shown that hybrid devices allow reaching record sensitivities in the measurement of forces, temperature and electric field at the nanoscale. The PhD topic aims at surpassing these propositions using higher frequencies and feedback for various potential metrology applications: measurement of forces during protein folding or DNA stretching, detection of single electric charges at small scales, nanoparticle thermometry…This thesis relies on the skills of the AIMAN team at IEMN in simulation, conception, realization and characterization of magnetoacoustic devices (double expertise in acoustics and magnetoelastic nanostructures) and on a collaboration with two leading laboratories in the realization of doped diamond: the LSPM (for synthesis, volume doping and integration) and the IRCP (for the creation of position-controlled single defects).
