The innovative Postgraduate Taught (PGT) programmes at WOPEC in the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Cardiff University incorporate both distance learning and contact teaching. We are seeking to appoint a part time PGT Teacher to join our motivated postgraduate teaching team. The successful applicant will undertake teaching and assessment both online and in-person within the School.
The post is for 1 day per week to (i) provide weekly supervision for half a day a week in the on-site paediatric clinic and (ii) contribute to the teaching and assessment of the WOPEC Paediatric Optometry modules (Paediatric Optometry OPT006 and Paediatric Optometry Practical OPT033) for half a day per week. Contribution to the modules involves online teaching and occasional attendance at practical training and assessment days. There is a requirement to deliver some live teaching episodes outside of standard office hours.
This post is for someone with a higher qualification in paediatric eye care e.g. Professional Certificate or Professional Higher Certificate in Paediatric Eye Care.
This is a part time position 0.2 FTE (7 hours per week) and is fixed term for a period of 3 years.
Salary: £39,347 – £44,263 plus market supplement, pro rata for hours worked (Grade 6).

Job Description
Main function
PGT Teachers undertake a full teaching and assessment load, including the development, delivery and evaluation of modules/programmes within the postgraduate provision of the School. They supervise students in clinics and carry out administrative duties within the work area as required. They also pursue excellence in teaching and are expected to inspire others to do the same.
Key Duties
Design and plan units of teaching within undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, such as individual lectures/seminars/workshops, larger sections of modules, or entire modules. This includes identifying learning objectives and selecting appropriate curricula; selecting teaching methods, resources and reading; determining, designing and producing study material; planning course delivery and planning for contingencies such as slower/faster progress than anticipated.
Where required, co-ordinate team teaching of modules, including liaison with other academics and/or postgraduate, to ensure the course complements other courses taken by students; collaborate with colleagues on course development and curriculum changes.
Deliver units of teaching, which includes individual lectures/seminars/workshops, larger sections of modules, or entire modules. This includes preparing teaching material, communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse to develop rational thinking; observing and reacting to student interventions; responding to questions outside class times and to contingencies in course delivery.
Carry out assessment for units of teaching, including designing assessment and marking criteria; supervising assessments where required (e.g., in class tests or presentations), marking assessments, entering marks on to university systems and providing written/oral feedback.
Supervise and mark undergraduate and PGT projects as required.
Undertake a significant academic administrative/management role within the relevant section of the school/unit or other appropriate managerial activities.
Carry out teaching evaluation, including facilitating student feedback; reflecting on own teaching design and delivery and implementing ideas for improving teaching delivery and own performance. Undertake continuous professional development activities agreed with line manager and through supporting activities such as probation or annual PDR (performance development review).
Act as a point of contact for both academic and pastoral student queries, signposting and referring students to relevant advice and support services. This may be in the capacity of a formal Personal Tutor, or as member of a module delivery team.
Carry out teaching related administrative duties as required, dealing promptly with reactive requests, such as those relating to teaching, supervising students and administrative tasks or actions from committees and working groups.
Undertake an academic administrative/management role within the relevant section of the school/unit or other appropriate managerial activities as required.
General Duties
Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties.
Abide by all University policies.
Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

Essential Criteria
1. General Optical Council registration and uphold membership of an NHS Health Board (or equivalent) to practice as an Optometrist/Ophthalmologist in the Cardiff University, and/or any associated, patient-facing clinics.
2. Higher Professional Qualification(s) e.g. Prof Cert Paed Eye Care, Higher Cert Paed or equivalent alternative.
3. Teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level.
4. Proven effective teaching skills and relevant teaching experience, particularly of lecture/class lesson planning, group management and appropriate methods of assessment.
5. Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media.
6. Advanced optometric clinical experience in the field appropriate to the course you will teach on.
7. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to make appropriate decisions on academic content of courses.
8. Ability to work using own initiative, without close supervision, to plan and prioritise own daily work and plan forward.
9. Ability to act as teaching co-ordinator, to ensure student needs and expectations are met.
10. IT competent- Minimum of PowerPoint, Microsoft Word and the internet.
Desirable Criteria
1. Postgraduate higher qualification (e.g. MSc) or PhD in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience.
2. Relevant professional/teaching and learning qualification e.g., AdvanceHE Fellowship status or postgraduate teaching qualification.
3. The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor.
