“PhD: Exploring the production, transport, and consumption of greenhouse gases in the subglacial environment
Offer DescriptionOffer DescriptionWe are seeking a talented and motivated PhD candidate to explore the production, transport, and consumption of greenhouse gases in the subglacial environment, with a focus on basal ice and sediments from the Greenland Ice Sheet.Project description and aimThe discovery of microorganisms in subglacial environments has confirmed that glaciers and ice-sheet beds are not sterile but host metabolically active microbial populations. One of the key objectives of the ERC Synergy Green2Ice project is to assess the extent of in-situ production of greenhouse gases (CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O) and the contribution of subglacial environments to the atmospheric burden of these potent greenhouse gases. As a PhD student, you will play a pivotal role in this interdisciplinary research. Your responsibilities will include measuring gas composition (N₂, O₂, Ar, CO₂, CH₄, N₂O) and isotopes (N₂O δ¹⁵Nα, δ¹⁵Nβ, and δ¹⁸O; CH₄ δ¹³C, δD), as well as developing 1D advection-diffusion-reaction models to replicate the observed vertical profiles and gain a mechanistic understanding of the underlying processes. You will be supervised by François Fripiat and Sandra Arndt (Department of Geosciences, Environment, and Society, Université Libre de Bruxelles) and collaborate closely with Prof. T. Röckmann for gas isotope measurements, which will involve extended research stays at Utrecht University.
