PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering: Future Electric Machines Manufacturing
Award Summary
100% UK fees covered, and a minimum tax-free annual living allowance of £18,622 (2023-24 UKRI rate). International students must find alternative funds to make up the difference.
Overview
This is a unique PhD scholarship based in the Newcastle University Electrical Power Group and working alongside the Future Electric Machines Manufacturing (FEMM) Hub team of researchers at Newcastle, Sheffield and Strathclyde Universities, AMRC and NMIS research institutes. This PhD will help you direct your career toward the sustainable electrification of society.
You will be a detailed and organised person with a blend of skills across manufacturing, technology, engineering, mathematics, simulation, and experimentation.
You will research the design and manufacture of electrical machines using a modular approach. This offers increased power density, simplified assembly and allows 3R (Repair, Replace, and Recycle) to be embedded in the design of electrical machines.
You will investigate the mechanical, manufacturing, thermal, electrical and magnetic issues associated with modular topologies and be able to apply new manufacturing and measurement techniques to overcome these issues. Along with the wider research team you will develop a better understanding of manufacturing, assembly, performance and ultimately recycling of the modular electrical machine.
This PhD will embed you in a network and offers you the opportunity to present at FEMM hub events, national and international conferences and be co-author on cross disciplinary research, as well the main author on your own research. This is a unique opportunity and places you in an enviable position with a wide professional network developed during your PhD.
