Offer DescriptionThe student will be recruited on a doctoral ED388 grant already available. He.she will be integrated into the NanoCat team of ITODYS laboratory ( ) which is specialized in the synthesis of nanomaterials for applications in catalysis and energy. The student will be part of a dynamic team of 6 researchers and teacher-researchers and 6 PhD student. He/she will benefit from the equipment available in the laboratory.The circular economy has become a necessity in our society. In particular, solutions are needed to manage plastic waste with efficient methods. In recent years, reductive depolymerization has emerged as a promising route for recycling waste plastics, as it enables them to be converted into value-added products and is applicable to a wide range of polymers. To develop this recycling route, the challenge is to develop active, selective, inexpensive, and recyclable catalysts. Thus, the aim of the PhD is to synthesize bimetallic nanoparticles, test them, for the first time, for the reductive hydrogenation of polymers and compare their activity and selectivity with the metal complexes currently under study.
As far as nanoparticles are concerned, Co-based alloys (in particular CoRu and CoNi) will be targeted because of their ferromagnetic nature, which enables easy catalyst recovery, and the proven activity of Co, Ru and Ni-based metal complexes. They will be synthesized by a soft chemistry method, the polyol method, mastered in the NanoCat team in which the PhD student will be integrated. They will be finely characterized in terms of composition, structure, microstructure, surface state in order to link these characteristics to the measured catalytic properties.
As far as depolymerization catalysis is concerned, initial tests will be carried out with Co and Ru complexes that have already proved their efficiency. Yields and selectivities will be compared with those obtained with bimetallic nanoparticles. The nanoparticles used as catalysts will be recovered after the reaction using a magnet and retested to check their recyclability.
