Offer Description
The project shall take place at the institute of chemistry and processes for energy, environment and health (ICPEES), in the organic chemistry for materials, biologic and optics (COMBO) and electrochemistry and energy conversion team (ECE), under the supervision of Dr. Julien Massue and Dr. Tristan Asset. The spectroelectrochemistry measurments shall be performed at the laboratory of bioimagery and pathologies (LBP).
This project operates within a major European consortium, including academics partners, research institutes and industrial partners. The project aims to develop a digital platform con-necting multiples research laboratory to increase the efficiency, and ease the development of materials and their integration in systems linked to the hydrogen cycle. The applicant shall work with several of those partners (e.g., Forschungszentrum Jülich GMBH, Paul Scherrer Institute, University of Leiden, etc.) develop those new molecular probes that shall be imple-mented in said platform.
It is understood that the pH at the electrode-electrolyte interface of a given electrochemical system greatly changes compared to the electrolyte bulk, i.e. far from the interface, when a reaction is occurring at said interface. Those local pH changes have a major effect on the activity and durability of a given electrochemical system and, as such, must be quantified and understood. However, experimental tools remain limited for such studies. Hence, in the frame of this PhD, we aim to develop a library of molecular, fluorescent probes, sensible to pH variations at reactive interfaces, that then shall be used to study various interfaces of interest to the hydrogen cycle. Those probes shall present several key features, such as solubility in aqueous media, high resolution in terms of the pH-dependency of their fluorescent properties in alkaline and acidic media, a high stability in those pH ranges and in the potential ranges consistent with the reactions taking place in the hydrogen cycle. Those probes then shall be used for electrochemical measurments coupled with confocal laser scanning microscopy to quantify the pH distribution at the electrode-electrolyte interface.
