Job description

Two fully-funded 3-year PhD studentships are available in Neuromorphic and Bio-inspired computing at the interface between control engineering, electrical engineering, computational neuroscience, artificial neural networks and bio-inspired robotics:“Rhythmic-reactive regulation for robotic locomotion” (Supervisor: Prof Fulvio Forni) will apply techniques from nonlinear control and optimisation to develop novel, bio-inspired neural networks that flexibly and robustly control locomotion in multi-limbed robots.“Self-organised clocks for reliable spiking computation” (Supervisor: Prof Timothy O’Leary) uses principles from systems neuroscience to develop reliable, low-power spiking neural networks and learning algorithms for implementation in a new generation of neuromorphic hardware.Both projects are part of a European consortium ( ), providing access to a community of 20 PhD students in world class institutions throughout Europe and a dedicated summer school. Candidates will join a thriving network of researchers with mixed backgrounds, based in the University of Cambridge.The award includes Gross Salary according to EU guidelines for Marie Sklodowska Curie trainees, including mobility payments and family allowances where applicable . Salary is subject to local tax, employee and employer social contributions, and other deductions following national regulations. The successful applicants are required to pay their fees themselves from their salaries at the staff fee rate (£3452pa) , and would be considered to be self-funded students for the purposes of admission.Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a first class degree in an Physics, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering or related subject.Applications should be submitted via the University of Cambridge Applicant Portal , with Fulvio Forni OR Timothy O’Leary identified as the potential supervisor and the Department of Engineering as the department.
