Post-doc in Applied Math- Numerical Analysis & Free-Surface Simulations (1.0 FTE)

Company:

Rijksuniversiteit Groningen

Job description

OrganisationJob descriptionWe have a vacancy for a post-doc in Applied Mathematics within the new project “HiWAVE – Natural hazard prevention with adaptive hierarchical models”, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) via the talent programme Vidi in the group of Assistant Professor Dr Julian Koellermeier.HiWAVE predicts free-surface waves by developing adaptive hierarchical models. A main novelty is to combine recently developed moment models with model adaptivity, i.e., using different model equations in different parts of the physical domain. This will be made possible using the hierarchical structure of the moment models. The outcome will be both accurate and fast reduced models that achieve high efficiency. In collaboration with two new PhD students and the rest of the PI’s group (4 PhDs + undergrad students), the post-doc is in charge of the model adaptivity aspect of the project. This includes the development and analysis of new numerical schemes to efficiently couple different models in the same simulation, for example, using a global multi-level method or local error-based control.HiWAVE aims at a breakthrough in mathematical modeling of free-surface waves, shifting from case-specific models towards adaptive model hierarchies. The results are expected to have major impact in the field of free-surface flows, but also in other fields like gas dynamics or uncertainty quantification. This post-doc position is within the mathematical modeling group of Assistant Professor Dr Julian Koellermeier, embedded in the Computational and Numerical Mathematics research unit of the Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. The project is set up to include interdisciplinary collaborations with other researchers from the fields of fluid dynamics, applied mathematics, or computer science. This position gives plenty opportunities to develop your academic portfolio via

  • Significant impact and publication output as part of the NWO VIDI project.
  • Visibility and networking opportunities via the project and the PI’s connections.
  • Co-supervision of (under)graduate students and PhD students.
  • Training programs that strengthen your skillset.
  • Active participation in the institute’s seminars and meetings.
  • The possibility for additional paid teaching duties.

Organisation
Founded in 1614, the University of Groningen enjoys an excellent international reputation as a dynamic and innovative institution of higher education offering high-quality teaching and research. Flexible study programmes and academic career opportunities in a wide variety of disciplines encourage the 34,000 students and researchers alike to develop their own individual talents. • A holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income and an 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • A full-time position (1.0 FTE). The position is for two years and is available as soon as possible.
  • Travel budget via the PI’s NWO VIDI project to attend national and international conferences and workshops.
  • Training budget to attend soft-skill seminars and trainings at the University of Groningen.
  • The possibility to co-supervise undergraduate and graduate students.

The conditions of employment are available at the University of Groningen website under Human Resources:The intended starting date is to be decided in agreement with the candidate, but as soon as possible, e.g., in early 2025.
