Offer Description

Internationally recognized generalist engineering school of the IMT (Institut Mines-Télécom), leading French engineering school (Technological University), IMT Atlantique aims to support transitions, train responsible engineers, and use scientific excellence to serve teaching, research and innovation.

The Microwave department, located at the Brest site, carries out research into the modeling, design, realization and characterization of high-frequency signal processing devices, antennas and associated devices, and original propagation media for their applications in various communications systems (HF, IoT, Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G, Radar, etc.). The candidate will join the SMART research team at Lab-STICC (UMR CNRS 62854).

For the past ten years, the SMART team has been working on the development of a magnet-free circulator and insulator technology. These so-called self-polarized components use pre-oriented hexaferrites, which naturally retain a high magnetization. Demonstrators have been built at frequencies ranging from Ku-band (15 GHz) to W-band (81-86 GHz), with state-of-the-art performance. A maturation project is currently underway to transfer this technology to industry, leading to the commercialization of miniature circulators that can be mounted on boards as close as possible to the amplifiers. Nevertheless, interconnections (bump, bonding…) are required to connect the component to the board, making it necessary to take account of their parasitic effects to optimize the system as a whole.

Within the framework of PEPR5G project, with the support of CEA LETI, the aim is to take the integration of these components a step further. CEA LETI is developing amplifiers in GaN technology

Under the functional responsibility of the Labsticc Director and in collaboration with a member of the UBO Electronics Department, the main tasks of the position are :

  • Contribute to the design of self-polarized circulators compatible with GaN technology integration
  • Act as an interface between Lab-STICC’s SMART team and CEA LETI to understand the technological constraints associated with this integration
  • Contribute to the manufacture of demonstrators

    Minimum education and/or experience required:

    • PhD obtained less than 3 years before date of hire in Physics

    Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

    • Knowledge of the magnetic properties of ferrites
    • Mastery of circulator synthesis methods
    • 3D EM simulation tools (Ansys HFSS)
    • Microwave measurement methods (calibration, S-parameter)

    Abilities and skills:

    • Ability to work as part of a research team
    • Ability to interact with people from different backgrounds (industrial partners, subcontractors, suppliers)
