Offer Description
MISSIONS
With the growing need of organizations to increase their business outcomes and secure their positions in a highly competitive market, the demand for using cloud services and resources has increased significantly. In the era of digital transformation, no organization can think of upgrading its information system or exposing its services without resorting to the cloud. More than this, exploiting services from diverse cloud providers has become a natural choice for organizations that seek to provide their services with high availability, rapid recovery, and reduced cost. Such a goal is possible but far from easy to achieve, especially with the existence of a highly monopolized cloud market, whereby users are forced largely to consume products from a single provider, leading therefore to complete dependence on this provider (aka vender-lock-in phenomenon). Unfortunately, antitrust regulations cannot break the cloud market monopoly in the near future. Instead, it would be better to think of feasible solutions from a software engineering perspective, including models, approaches, and techniques that can liberate cloud users from being dependent on a single provider.
Our research team made the first steps towards breaking this provider dependency by proposing a description model that describes both user demands and service offers independently from any cloud provider and a service discovery approach. This description enables cloud users to efficiently discover and consume cloud services from different providers. Yet, the challenge is to devise techniques that allow the automated composition of services from different providers, a key step towards satisfying the new emerging complex user requirements. The composition step should exploit the outputs of our current discovery approach that consists of returning for each requested service either a set of services or a composition of services that matches it. In this context, the composition can be considered as a selection of the best combination of service offers that satisfy the user’s needs as well as his preferences/constraints. Once the user has confirmed the final combination of services, a generation step of its deployment model is essential, which is then used to implement the newly built composite service.
ACTIVITIES
- Bibliographic study on the composition of services in the cloud to determine recent approaches in order to identify gaps and possible improvements
- Proposing a new composition method or extending an existing one based on the conclusions of the conducted study
- Bibliographic study on the generation of deployment models for composite services in order to identify gaps and possible improvements

- Validation of the two methods with practical use cases
