Offer Description

The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 21 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

You will participate in ongoing in-house research programmes, operate the beamline, provide support to external users as a local contact, and develop your own research programme.

You will join the team in charge of operating and upgrading the ESRF beamline ID12, which offers unique possibilities for studying the magnetic and electronic properties of matter by exploiting polarization-dependent X-ray absorption under multiple extreme conditions of magnetic field, temperature, and pressure. Current instrumental interests include developing an experimental setup that allows the measurement of element-specific magnetic moments using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and high-resolution X-ray diffraction simultaneously with the measurement of various macroscopic properties (magnetization, volume changes, magnetocaloric properties, and resistivity), all as a function of magnetic field and temperature.

You will design and perform experiments, analyze data, and publish results in the field of magnetism using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS)/XMCD and diffraction techniques in the hard X-ray range, complemented with simultaneous measurements of macroscopic properties such as magnetization, volume changes, magnetocaloric properties, and resistivity under high magnetic field. Develop a personal research program with your own academic and/or industrial partners, exploiting the capabilities of beamline ID12. Assist the beamline staff in technical development in the field of polarization-dependent XAS, analysis of dichroism spectra, or complementary “laboratory-type” techniques. Contribute to the beamline’s continuous operation and provide user service. Participate in the scientific events of the beamline and the ESRF.
