Post-Doctoral Research Visit F/M ML for system: Improving memory management using AI
Offer DescriptionAs part of the Inria OS Challenge, we have designed and developed the USM platform, which enables the implementation of specialized memory management policies for applications with specific memory access patterns, such as key-value stores (KVS). Under USM, policies developed by system administrators execute in user space, which greatly facilitates their deployment and maintenance. A functional prototype of USM already exists and has been used to specialize the memory management of several applications, including virtual machines.Running memory management policies in user space opens up new opportunities, particularly the integration of AI models to predict memory accesses and anticipate page faults. At present, it is almost impossible to execute AI models in kernel space, since floating-point operations-required by AI workloads-are not supported there. USM makes it possible to replace traditional heuristics with AI-based techniques for memory management.The objective of this project is to explore the use of AI within USM and to investigate the hardware and software conditions under which this approach is both relevant and practical.The recruited postdoctoral researcher may be required to travel to France for meetings or to present the results of this work internationally. All travel expenses will be fully covered by the project.MissionsWith the support of the PhD student who implemented the USM platform, the recruited postdoctoral researcher will:Design AI models capable of predicting memory access patterns.Integrate these models into the USM platform, conduct experiments, and analyze the results.Write and submit a scientific article presenting the findings.To ensure a solid understanding of the proposed research topic, a state of the art, bibliography, and relevant scientific references will be provided to the postdoc at the beginning of the project.CollaborationThe postdoc will collaborate closely with:Papa Assane Fall (PhD student): for technical aspects related to USM.Alain Tchana (Professor): for strategic discussions and scientific guidance.ResponsibilitiesThe recruited postdoc will be responsible for:Taking initiative in selecting appropriate AI models for memory access prediction.Driving the experimentation and evaluation process.Leading the writing of the scientific article to disseminate the results.Main ActivitiesDesign of AI models for memory access prediction.Integration of AI models into the USM platform.Design and setup of the experimental environment.Execution and analysis of experiments.Writing and dissemination of scientific articles.Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsSkills/QualificationsStrong background in Operating Systems and Linux developmentKnowledge of memory management mechanisms and system-level programmingExperience with Machine Learning models (design, training, evaluation)Proficiency in C/C++ and/or Python for systems and AI developmentAbility to design and run experimental evaluations on real systemsExcellent scientific writing and communication skillsCapacity to work independently while collaborating effectively in a research teamSpecific RequirementsDesired ProfileComfortable working in a dynamic scientific environment, with curiosity, willingness to learn, and strong listening skills.Passionate about innovation, with expertise in Linux development (Linux on Rail is a plus) and strong persuasive abilities.A PhD in Operating Systems or a closely related field is considered a strong asset.Languages FRENCH Level BasicLanguages ENGLISH Level GoodAdditional InformationBenefits
