The Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design, Conservation invites applications for a two-year, full-time position as a postdoc in Human-Computer Interaction and Reading Accessibility.The vacant position is affiliated with the Institute of Design and Visual Interaction, where the postdoc will be joining the research unit Centre for Visibility Design.The position should ideally be filled by 1 November 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter.You can read about the institute and the centre here:About the positionThe postdoc position is a two-year, full-time research position, supported by an externally funded grant.The work will involve designing and conducting experiments with low-vision patients recruited from private ophthalmological clinics, in collaboration with Aarhus University Hospital. The project is coordinated by the Royal Danish Academy and is carried out in partnership with DTU.As a postdoc it will be your responsibility, within the scope of this project, to:

• contribute to the development of an adaptive reading platform designed to support older adults with peripheral vision loss caused by primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). This work will take place in close collaboration with an interdisciplinary network of partners in design, engineering, and ophthalmology.
• formulate research questions to evaluate the effectiveness of AI-driven adaptive visual interventions tailored to specific patterns of visual impairment.
• plan and conduct experimental studies with users, including participant recruitment, user testing, and data collection in laboratory settings.
• collect and analyse multimodal data, which may include eye tracking, psychophysical responses, reading speed, and comprehension performance.
• publish scientific papers and disseminating findings at national and international academic venues, as well as relevant design and health communication platforms.
• coordinate with clinical partners, including private ophthalmological clinics and Aarhus University Hospital, to ensure integration of design and health expertise throughout the research process.

In addition, you will be expected to:

• actively contribute to the multidisciplinary research environment at the Centre for Visibility Design and strengthen the team through your specific competencies and collaborative spirit.

QualificationsWe are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in reading psychology, visual perception, or accessibility-focused design. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with eye tracking, user experience research, or human-computer interaction-and preferably a working knowledge of how artificial intelligence can be applied in interaction design. You should be comfortable conducting independent research, coordinating experimental studies, analysing data, and working in interdisciplinary teams spanning design, engineering, and vision science.We are particularly interested in applicants who demonstrate a creative mindset and a willingness to integrate knowledge across disciplines to generate new insights that advance the field of design. A strong commitment to scientific rigor and user-centred development is essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively across domains.To qualify for the position, it is required that you hold a master’s level degree in a relevant field and a PhD or PhD-level scientific qualifications.Further qualifications that would strengthen your application include*:

• Demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality academic research, including scientific writing and dissemination
• Experience in experimental design and data analysis in human-subjects research
• Familiarity with eye tracking, psychophysics, or related biosensory methods
• Experience with participants who have visual impairments or other accessibility needs
• Proficiency in programming for data analysis or experimental control (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB)
• Knowledge of visual perception, cognitive psychology, or reading research
• Understanding of human-computer interaction, machine learning, or AI-integrated interface design
• Interest in inclusive and user-centred design approaches
