Job Description:DTU Aqua (The National Institute for Aquatic Resources, Technical University of Denmark) offers a 2-year Post doc position focused on the functional ecology of phagotrophic flagellates and early eukaryotic evolution.The position is part of a cross-disciplinary project funded by the Human Frontiers Science Program that combines live imaging of swimming and foraging flagellates with formal fluid physics analyses. The project involves collaboration with laboratories in England and Canada and scientist with diverse expertise in fluid physics, phylogeny, and ecology.Responsibilities and qualifications
The project aims to (i) mechanistically understand the foraging mechanism in diverse phagotrophic flagellates, (ii) to use the functional ecology of flagellates as a new lens to explore early eukaryotic evolution and (iii) to understand the role of flagellates in governing the microbiome of the ocean.The successful candidate will have a background in biology with experience in microscopy and flagellate ecology and an interest in small-scale fluid physics, or a background in (computational) fluid physics and an interest in low Re biological flows. Depending on the successful candidate the main tasks will be:

• Maintain cultures of phagotrophic flagellates
• Do live-imaging of foraging and swimming of diverse flagellates using high-speed video microscopy
• Interpret 2-dimensional projections to generate 3-dimensikonal models and descriptions of motility patterns, swimming gaits, prey encounter, and prey handling
• Perform experiments to quantify foraging capacity and prey selectivity in selected flagellates
• Do formal fluid mechanical analyses, including cfd, of propulsion and foraging mechanisms in selected flagellates, based on observations.
• Supervise Bsc and Msc student projects.
