Job description

Salary for this Role:From £43,210, subject to skills and experienceJob Title:Postdoctoral Fellow – Chudnovskiy LabReports to: Aleksey ChudnovskiyClosing Date: 12/May/2024 23.59 GMTJob Description:Postdoctoral Fellow – A. Chudnovskiy lab.Reporting to: Aleksey Chudnovskiy, Group LeaderContact term: This is a full time 4-year position on Crick terms and conditions of employment. The Research GroupThe laboratory of Tumour-Immune Communication has been established in early 2024. We study bidirectional interactions between cancer cells and the host immune system using synthetic and molecular biology, genetics, and immunology. This research delineates how interaction dynamics between tumour cells and immune cells influence each other, contributing to our understanding of tumour progression and antitumour immune response. The ProjectThis project is designed to understand the interactions between tumour cells and immune cells utilising a variety of tumour cell lines and genetic models, with a primary but not exclusive focus on lung cancer and lung metastases. Our laboratory is equipped to track tumour-immune interactions at the single cell level. The LIPSTIC system—Labeling Immune Partnerships by SorTagging Intercellular Contacts—is used to unravel the cellular communication within the tumour microenvironment, concentrating on the interactions between tumour cells and immune cells, as well as between different antigen-presenting cells and T cells. The postdoctoral researcher will employ advanced genetic and molecular biology techniques as well as a lot of scRNA-seq to investigate the principles that govern the dynamics of tumour-immune interactions, aiming to apply this understanding to the development of cancer treatments. The work will involve the study of a wide range of tumour models, with an emphasis on lung cancer and other cancers that metastasise to the lung. The initial phase of the project will characterise the nature of tumour-immune interactions during steady-state tumour growth and after therapeutic interventions. In the later stages, the project is likely to evolve into a detailed mechanistic study of the interactions between specific immune cell populations and tumour cells. The ultimate goal is to utilise the findings from these studies to enhance therapeutic approaches for cancer. The postholder will be responsible for:Performing initial characterization of tumor-immune interactions at a single cell level using LIPSTIC and other cell-cell interaction tracing techniques.Understanding molecular mechanisms that drive tumor-immune interactions.Manipulating tumor-immune interactions to enhance antitumor immunity.Postdoctoral Fellows will lead their own projects, contribute to other projects on a collaborative basis (both in the lab and with external collaborators) and may guide PhD students in their research. The ability to work in a team is essential.Key experience and competenciesThe post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values:Bold; Open; CollegialEssentialPhD in immunology, cancer biology, molecular or cellular biology or in the final stages of PhD submissionGood knowledge and experience in immunology and/or tumor biology and/or molecular or cellular biologyTechnical expertise in basic immunological and/or molecular and/or cellular biology techniques.Track record of writing papers as evidenced by publications or submitted manuscripts in referred journalsEvidence of data presentation at scientific meetingsDesirableExperience in research with mouse tumour models cell lines or genetic tumour modelsGood understanding of innate and adaptive immunityExperience in flow cytometry, single cell sequencing, Cas9 based genetic screens, single cell RNA-seq data analysis using R or PythonAbout UsAt the Crick, we conduct research at the forefront of biomedical research.
