Postdoctoral fellowship in geophysical mapping of giant paraglacial landslides
Regeringen
Are you a geoscientist looking to unravel the mysteries of large-scale landslides in previously glaciated terrains? Do you want to use cutting-edge methods (geophysical or otherwise), including TEM and shallow seismic surveys, to illuminate the internal structure of these fascinating landforms?Join our international research team at GEUS in Copenhagen as a postdoc for a 3-year position investigating how paraglacial processes have reshaped Denmark’s landscape since the previous glaciation. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.About the positionYou become part of a three-year research project “Reimagining Previously Glaciated Lands”, led by Senior Researcher Kristian Svennevig, funded by the Carlsberg Foundation, Semper Ardens Accelerate grant. This project explores the role of giant paraglacial landslides in shaping previously glaciated landscapes.Specifically, you will conduct field-based geophysical surveys using TEM and shallow seismic techniques in close collaboration with the skilled geophysicists at GEUS.You will also:
This position offers exciting opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration – both within the parallel GEUS project “Landslides in Denmark”, to map and understand active landslides, and with external partners. You will benefit from ongoing research on active landslides in Denmark and Greenland and be encouraged to pursue short research visits or extended stays at international partner institutions.A PhD student will concentrate on nationwide morphological mapping using high-resolution LiDAR DEMs, you will take the lead on examining specific cases using state-of-the-art geophysical methods to analyze the subsurface structure of giant paraglacial landslides.Who are you?You must hold a PhD degree in geoscience (or have submitted your PhD thesis for assessment). Previous experiences with geomorphology, paraglacial processes, and geophysical methods (e.g. TEM, seismic) are highly desired. You should also demonstrate strong analytical skills and the ability to integrate diverse datasets (e.g. DEM, well logs, geophysical surveys). Independence, creativity, and enthusiasm for field-based research are key, as are excellent collaboration and communication skills – particularly in an interdisciplinary environment. You must be able to communicate fluently in English, and since the primary language of the organisation is Danish, you should be prepared to learn Danish.Meet your new colleaguesYou will be joining the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), a dynamic and internationally recognized research institution under the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities. GEUS employs geologists, geophysicists, hydrologists, and environmental researchers who work on a broad range of topics related to climate, energy, and natural hazards. You will be placed in the Department of Mapping and Mineral Resources in Copenhagen but collaborating closely with scientists from all of GEUS – including colleagues in the Aarhus department.A working environment with a focus on professional development and well-beingThere are many good reasons why you should choose a working life at GEUS.We are a diverse staff of about 300 committed employees.
