Research Project DescriptionThis project explores whether internal corporate corruption indicators-namely OverPerk and OverPay-are predictors of corruption risk in public procurement. OverPerk and OverPay are defined as the residuals from predicted models of perk spending (Luo et al., 2011) and executive compensation (Core et al., 1999), and will be constructed using BoardEx data, which provides detailed global information on executive pay, perks, and board composition.Corruption risk in public procurement will be measured using the Corruption Risk Index (CRI) developed by Fazekas and Kocsis (2020). CRI data will be sourced from the Global Contract-level Public Procurement Dataset (Fazekas et al., 2024), which includes over 72 million contracts from 42 countries between 2006 and 2021. This dataset offers harmonised information on contract-level indicators (e.g. single bidding, closed procedures) that reflect systemic corruption risks in public procurement markets. The core research question is whether firms with signs of internal corruption (i.e. higher OverPerk and OverPay) are more likely to be involved in public contracts with higher corruption risk scores. The project incorporates a gender lens to assess whether women on corporate boards play a moderating role in this relationship, potentially mitigating the link between internal mismanagement and external corruption exposure. By analysing how gender diversity in leadership influences ethical decision-making and risk exposure, the project contributes to the growing literature on corporate integrity and inclusive governance. This research aligns with EU priorities on gender equality and anti-corruption, and offers valuable insights for policy, regulatory design, and corporate governance practices across sectors and countries.Candidate requirements: Postdoctoral candidates of any nationality (max. 8 years after defense) with:
