Contract: Full Time/Fixed TermTyndall National Institute is seeking a highly skilled Postdoctoral Researcher in Engineering to contribute to the system development of advanced electrochemical sensor systems. Tyndall plays a pivotal role in developing smart sensing technologies for precision agriculture. This position focuses on circuit design, PCB development, and system integration for next-generation environmental and agricultural sensors. Tyndall National Institute, a leader in microelectronics and sensor development, is at the forefront of designing cutting-edge electronic monitoring solutions. The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for designing, optimizing, and integrating electronic systems for electrochemical sensor platforms. The role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, industry partners, and research consortia to advance sensor technologies for real-world applications.Purpose of the role
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Researcher to join our interdisciplinary research and development team. In this role, you will work closely with electrochemists, PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers to design and implement interface circuit systems for electrochemical sensors. Your work will directly contribute to the development of next generation sensing technologies for scientific and industrial applications.Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Work with electrochemical scientists to understand sensor requirements such as sensor performance characteristics.
• Design stable and flexible analog front-end circuits for electrochemical sensors using discrete components and integrated potentiostat chips.
• Develop and design circuits, printed circuit boards (PCBs), passives etc and integrate and support the electrochemical interface system.
• Test and benchmark circuit performance through comparison with industry-standard electrochemical instruments.
• Perform comprehensive evaluations including both electrical and electrochemical performance metrics.
• Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
• Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
• Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
• Carry out any additional duties as may be reasonably required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

• PhD in Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Proficient in embedded system design using microcontrollers such as Cortex-M0/M1/M3.
• Demonstrated knowledge of analog and digital circuit design, including knowledge of common modules: operational amplifiers, transimpedance amplifiers, transconductance amplifiers, ADCs, DACs, etc. evidenced through published literature, patents etc.
• Demonstrated experience of typically 5+ years in PCB design and layout; familiarity with EMI/EMC mitigation techniques.
• Profficent in using PCB design tools such as Altium Designer.
• Demonstrated knowledge in signals and systems, including FFT analysis, analog and digital filter design.
• Proficient in at least one scripting or data analysis language, such as Python or MATLAB.
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a results-oriented mindset.
• Demonstrated engagement with research partners to drive innovation in sensor electronics and contribute to funding proposals.

Desirable criteria

• Evidence of entrepreneurial experience and creative skills/creativity
• Skilled in using test and measurement equipment like oscilloscopes, waveform generators, etc.
• Passion for learning and working in interdisciplinary environments.
• Ability to deliver high-quality work on time with minimal supervision
• Knowledge of electrochemical sensing technologies.
• Familiarity with electrochemical sensors and common testing techniques such as Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS).
• Experience in multidisciplinary research projects in industry or academia
• Previous involvement in EU or industry-funded research projects
• Experience of writing grant proposals
• Some experience of working collaboratively with industry
• Highly self-motivated and able to demonstrate initiative
• A commitment to personal growth and development
• A background or experience in the agricultural sector
