The PD is a programme for investigative professionals in arts and design who aim to develop their creative and artistic research further. The Arts + Creative PD programme has been developed by art and design professors from 15 universities of applied sciences universities across the Netherlands. It is currently in a pilot phase: The goal is that eventually the PD degree becomes a EQF level 8 degree, awarded by universities of applied science.As a Professional Doctorate (PD) candidate, you are responsible for defining, conducting, and finalizing artistic research projects that intervene in complex practices and environments, that contribute to the development of the field, and that will create connections with other social fields and partners. You ensure the alignment of your research with the overarching goals of the PD initiative and make your research accessible to both academic and professional communities. Your key responsibilities can be divided as follows:Defining your research project

• Identify and critically analyze artistic and societal developments relevant to your practice.
• Develop a research proposal, including suitable methodologies, in collaboration with your supervisors and relevant stakeholders.
• Establish connections with institutional and external partners to secure additional research funding where needed.
• Align your project with the broader objectives of the PD programme and the context of Avans Creative Innovation.

Conducting artistic research

• Develop and implement a robust methodological framework that reflects your artistic research objectives.
• Collaborate with other researchers, students, and stakeholders to co-create and refine research outcomes.
• Teach within Avans Creative Innovation programs, linking your research practice to educational activities.
• Achieve change within social domains other than the candidates own field of practice.
• Identify and design an intervention that innovates the art and/or design practice (including making, design, curatorial and pedagogical practices) and/or revises its relationship to other social sectors.

Finalizing and Disseminating Research

• Document and present research outcomes through suitable artistic and academic channels.
• Critically evaluate the research process and identify areas for improvement.
• Share findings with the academic and professional communities, contributing to knowledge exchange between education, the arts, and society.

You will independently shape your research approach and project deliverables, within the framework of the PD programme and under the guidance of your supervisory team. This four-year full-time position offers you the opportunity to contribute to the emerging field of artistic research while advancing your professional and academic expertise.Please note that following and completing a PD trajectory does not result in a formal degree yet. However, the programme is expected to be legally accredited during the pilot phase, although no guarantees can be made at this moment.Your place as a PD candidate within AvansYour place as a PD candidate within AvansAs PD candidate, you will be located at and employed by the Centre of Applied Research for Art, Design & Technology (CARADT) in s’-Hertogenbosch. Art and design play a significant role in the development of society. CARADT empowers artists, researchers, and designers to fulfill this role. • A monthly salary of a minimum of € 4.535 to a maximum of € 6.359 gross for a full time appointment (scale 11 collective labor agreement for higher professional education).
• An end-of-year bonus, which is approximately equal to a thirteenth month.
• A temporary contract for 4 years due to the duration of the funding.

• A Master’s degree in art and/or design with a strong research focus and proven ability to integrate theory and practice, together with excellent knowledge of critical theory/sociology.
• Proven skills in communicating research to a wider audience.
• At least 5 years of professional experience in the creative industry, including familiarity with its dynamics, challenges, and opportunities. You have worked in strategic roles within international agencies or brands, beyond freelance work, and are familiar with diverse international working environments.
• Strong teaching experience, including mentoring students and creating meaningful opportunities for student involvement in research.
• Excellent command of English and Dutch, alongside proven skills in effectively communicating research to a broader audience.
